A Labradoodle is one of the newer so-called designer breeds that has become very popular among dog owners in recent years. Labradoodle is a combination of two very successful breeds, Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Although Labradoodles are bred for their appearance, they also inherit the best traits from both breeds in terms of health, temperament, etc. The Labradoodle breed is quickly taking the world by storm as one of the breeds one just has to have, therefore you also see more and more Labradoodles for sale. Labradoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic dogs, making them easy pets for people who have canine allergies or asthma. It can be said that Labradoodles shed less than other popular dog breeds, like Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever. However, there may be certain individuals within the breed that shed more than others, just like any other group within the dog breed.

Appearance and characteristics of the Labradoodle

Labradoodles are most often medium-sized dogs with a compact physique and can weigh up to 30 kg. However, it is officially available in 3 sizes, small, medium and large, depending on what it is bred for. Expect the breed to grow very fast within the first year.

The color varies from black to brown or completely light depending on the dog. The eyes of the Labradoodle are round, dark in color and very expressive. The ears are broad at the base and fall forward close to the cheeks when they are adults, or continue to rise throughout life, but never completely upright. Labradoodle breeders often try to shorten the length of the coat, as a shorter coat look is more popular.

Since a labradoodle is a mixed breed, it is also available in different fur varieties. There is a curly wool coat, fleece coat and a more straight or wavy coat type. The curly wool coat is most reminiscent of a Poodle and is the type of fur that requires the least care. The fleece coat is the most common type of coat, but you can also risk having a dog with a longer wavy coat. That variant sheds significantly more than the other two.

Fur care of a Labradoodle

The coat is water-repellent and is therefore easy to care for, however, a wet coat can tend to filter a lot, which you should be aware of. Brush the coat through once or twice a week to prevent felt knots from forming. Also, always make sure to keep your dog dry, so that you do not strain the skin under the coat too much. Start grooming it early, so your puppy gets used to being groomed. Because the breed doesn't shed, it is important to trim or groom the coat a few times a year. The longer the coat, the more care it requires. If you have got a Labradoodle with fleece fur, you will have the variant that requires the most care in the form of trimming or grooming.
