Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a very agile and active dog, which today, however, has adapted to life in the family, and will function well in a life as a family and companion dog. The breed is also suitable for various types of dog sports, which, for an example, could be agility. The breed may be a little skeptical of strangers, both humans and dogs, and the male dogs may well be a little challenging towards other male dogs. However, the dog's nature is largely determined by the degree of socialization, so if you are good at socializing the dog from the time it is a puppy, it can work much better with other dogs when it is an adult. The breed has a great need for physical, active employment and good contact with the family. The dog should be socialized with strangers from the time it is a puppy, but also with dogs and have many good experiences to promote its acceptance of others.

The breed can be traced all the way back to the middle of the 16th century. With its very lively antics and with the beautiful white tail, it enticed birds to approach the net it was to be caught in or into a channel, which was covered with wire mesh, a so-called bunk ("kooike" in Dutch). The dog should preferably remain silent at all times, so it will not frighten the birds. Some dogs of this breed still work in the same way, but the purpose is now to ring the birds, and not just to catch them. After World War II, unfortunately, only 25 of these dogs remained, but fortunately, the breed has now been re-established.

They grow to 35-42 cm in height, and the ideal height is 38 cm for females and 40 cm for males. Their weight is about 9-16 kg.

The activity level of the breed

Due to the origin of the breed, the dog's desire to hunt differs decisively from the other hunting dogs, and the hunting desire will not create problems in your everyday life. The breed attaches itself very strongly to the family, and it would be described as the type that will roam around on its own. The breed is very curious and would like to explore everything it comes close to.
