A Jagdterrier, or Hunting Terrier, as it is called in English, is a dog breed within the type of Terrier. It is a drifting hunting dog, which means that it is particularly suitable for drift hunting and wild boar hunting.
The Jagdterrier originated in the 1920s when some German dog breeders started a breeding program with the aim of creating a new dog breed that would be used exclusively for hunting. They wanted a versatile hunting dog with a great hunting instinct, which should be used for both grave hunting, hunting wild boar and be both driving and retrieving.
To create this new hunting dog breed, they used i.a. the Fox Terrier, the english Toy Terrier, Lakeland Terrier, the german Pinscher and of course other dog breeds. The result was the German Hunting Terrier as we know it today. A dog, with a distinctly large hunting instinct, which is suitable for several different forms of hunting. The Jagdterrier was approved by the German dog organization, which is called Verband für das Deutsche Hundewesen, in 1926. In the 1960s, the first dog of the breed came to Denmark.
The Jagdterrier is a relatively small dog, which is extremely strong, hardy and resistant despite its size. The dog is 33 to 40 cm tall and weighs between 7.5 and 10 kg. The males and females are roughly equal in size. The coat is short and close-fitting, typically black or dark brown with gray or reddish-yellow markings.
The Jagdterrier is a real hunting dog, which can not be emphasized enough. It's not without reason that the dog has been given the name it once had. In other words, it is not a dog you should get if you just want a companion or family dog. This is not suitable for the dog to be - at least not exclusively. The breed, on the other hand, needs to use its hunting instincts in order to thrive, otherwise, it will get bored and become restless and possibly destructive.
However, the dog can function well as a family dog, if it is also used for hunting or other activities. However, it tends to be primarily attached to one particular person of the family and may well be a bit reserved and skeptical towards strangers. In addition, it may also be a bit conflict-seeking towards other dogs. It is therefore not a dog that is particularly suitable as a beginner dog, but rather a dog that should only be acquired by the experienced dog owner. It is also important that you train obedience with the dog, and this training should start from when it is a puppy. You should make sure to socialize the dog with other dogs, so that it will get used to meeting new friends.
As a hunting dog, the Jagdterrier, despite its size, is an extremely brave, hardy and robust hunting dog. The German Hunting Terrier is a so-called short-term hunting dog. In Denmark, the driving hunting dogs are divided into two categories; short-term hunting dogs and long-term hunting dogs. Short-term hunting dogs, such as the Jagdterrier, have a driving time of about a quarter to a maximum of half an hour and are characterized by the fact that they must seek out the game and by barking, drive it to the hunter, after which the dog must return to its handler. This type of hunting is very suitable for the Jagdterrier. As a hunting dog, the Jagdterrier is used to working independently, quickly, loudly and at a great distance from its owner. Like most other terriers, it also tends to dig. These are all factors that should be taken into consideration before acquiring a Jagdterrier.
Due to the rough and close-fitting coat of the Jagdterrier, it is not a dog that requires much fur care. Thus, trimming is rarely necessary. A brush every now and then to remove loose hair is usually fine for this breed.
