Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a very independent and energetic dog. It is generally super sociable towards the family, but can still be somewhat reserved in relation to strangers. It can especially have problems with male dogs, as it can be a little challenging towards them. It is a breed that will look at its surroundings before trusting them. The dog can adapt to life in an active family, but this breed is not a dog for the family who is looking for its first dog ever. There should be some experience with dogs before acquiring this breed.

The breed requires its owner to keep this dog in a good place, both physical and mental. The breed has a great need for close contact and a lot of exercise, preferably with daily swimming trips, if you are lucky enough to live close to a lake. Retrieving from water is one of its absolute favorite tasks.

The origin of the breed is difficult to answer precisely. However, it is believed that it was developed on the basis of dog breeds from especially the Middle East, which came to Ireland through Spain or Portugal. The breed's earliest Irish mention dates back to around the year 1600, so the breed probably came to the country before the shotgun was developed. In addition to water work, the breed can also be adapted to other forms of hunting. The dog also kindly retrieves from land and also from dense vegetation, and the dog can even be trained to take care of birds, so overall a good hunting dog both on land and in water.

Males grow up to around 53-59 cm, while females of the breed grow to about 51-56 cm. They will weigh 20-30 kg when they are adults.

The activity level of the breed

It is an active, enduring and robust breed that is good for hunting - more reminiscent of a retriever than a spaniel. The breed usually keeps a good contact with its owner or hunter, especially when the owner is set on and knows how to challenge it with tasks that the dog finds meaningful. This could, for example, be retrieval of various things.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed has small dense curls on the whole body, and a little further in front and on the legs. The coat must not be wooly, and it should preferably have a natural oil content, so that it repels water. An Irish Water Spaniel sheds, not only a single strand of hair, but preferably with tufts. The breed will shed like this all year round, which is why the coat requires a lot of care. The fur care will require you to brush the dog, at least every fortnight. It can also be a good idea to do a haircut every other month, as this will help keep the coat a little lighter.

Management of the breed

The breed is not very easy to raise, so the training requires some experience and understanding, and it is important to get acquainted with it before you get the dog. For the most part, the dog must be treated very kind, but with consistency. However, other times, more sensitive work must be done to strengthen the cooperation with the owner.
