Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is generally very social and full of love for the family and very accommodating to strangers, but also other dogs. The dog is basically a very energetic hunting dog, but it is also really good at adapting. This means that it can get easily used to living with people if they are willing to satisfy the dog's huge need to use his nose. The breed needs a very close relationship and contact with its owners and has a great need to be engaged in some tasks that the dog thinks make sense. Lack of physical and mental activity can manifest itself as restlessness.

The origin of the breed is the same as the other Setter breeds. The breed is available in 2 variants, which, to this day, are considered two completely independent breeds. The red and white is the oldest of them, and it was claimed at the time, i.e. up through the 19th century, that it was much more effective in, for example, hunting. The breed, which is completely red, became known as being the most beautiful of the two breeds, and it also led to a focus on its appearance, so in some countries it went beyond the characteristics of the dog. Fortunately, many breeders around the world have now stuck to creating today's most efficient and beautiful hunting dog that, at the same time, is also a good family dog.

Males are 58-67 cm, and females 55-62 cm. They will weigh 20-30 kg when fully grown.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is very lively, super fast and extremely enduring with a very great desire to hunt. The dog maintains a really good contact, and if it is well trained, it gladly follows the instructions it is given. However, the breed is sometimes difficult to call back, if it has gotten the scent of something exciting, and it should therefore be kept on a short leash in busy places, for example, when walking close to the roads.

Fur care and hygiene

The slightly long coat is incredibly smooth and without any waves or curls. It is glossy, like silk and not as thick as other setters. Regular use of the brush keeps the coat clean and nice, and free from shedding and the coat on the chest, legs and tail is completely free of filters, which can bother the dog a lot.

Management of the breed

The breed is very attentive and usually very positive towards learning. The dog grows up a little late, so the training must start very early and be very friendly and pleasurable - that is, on the dog's terms, but also at the same time persistent and consistent. Use retrieval as a reward.
