Much of the old-fashioned and original shepherd dog is preserved in the Puli that we know today. The breed is very teachable and loves to do anything. It is good at performing independent tasks, and then it protects and takes care of those it loves. It could be the children of the family, for example. In the face of strangers, the dog may be a little reserved and protective. The breed's very strong instinct from the shepherd dog must be respected. The dog must be mentally challenged and have the opportunity to move freely so that it can use its body. If it gets bored and stays inside all day, it can start barking.
The breed reportedly came to Hungary with the Magyars in the ninth century, and the dog is most likely closely related to the Tibetan Terrier. For hundreds of years, the Puli has been used as a sheepdog out on the Hungarian plains, and it still does in some places. With the dense flocks of sheep, the dog gets a much better view by jumping up on the back of one of the sheep. Working dogs are often trimmed at the same time as the sheep. Males grow to 37-47 cm and females 34-44 cm. They will weigh 10-15 kg.
The breed is a very independent dog, which is not always good to listen to right away and react. It loves contact, but is also able to be independent and entertain itself. As such, it does not have a hunting instinct and is not the type that suddenly just runs away by itself.
The breed's very special fur requires quite a bit of work from its owner. The dog's undercoat sits together with the cover hairs, and becomes long leashes, which actually go all the way down to the ground. They should be twisted individually from when the dog is a puppy and should not be sorted out with a brush. You should give the dog a bath regularly, if it is going to be inside the house and you want to avoid the smell that it might bring with it.
The breed is incredibly teachable, understands quickly and is really happy to learn and do commands. If you start training early with the dog and socialize it with other dogs, it will be good for its need to "shepherd" other dogs. You have to train the dog for short periods with a good break, so that it does not get bored.
