Background knowledge of the breed

All four less common Japanese Spitz dog breeds have a lot in common. By nature, they are very friendly and calm. The breed is also nice and good in peaceful situations, but they are also very vigilant and can be somewhat dismissive towards new people and other animals in the beginning. With the right upbringing, they can easily adapt to an active family that has good dog experience, but it needs an owner who can put himself in respect so that the dog understands that it is the owner who decides.

It is a natural dog, which even with an early socialization is not good at being exclusively used as a companion dog. They are medium in size, very strong, enduring and need lots of exercise and challenges such as track work. They love close contact with people they know, feel safe with and respect. The ancestors of the medium-sized Japanese Pointing Dogs came about 4,000 years ago to the archipelago from the Asian mainland. They adapted to the different climatic and terrain conditions, but without their appearance changing significantly. They were first approved as independent breeds during the 1930s and have subsequently been declared "natural monuments" in Japan. Males grow to 48-52 cm, and females 45-49 cm. They weigh 16-18 kg when they are adults.

The activity level of the breed

The Breed has previously been widely used for hunting large game such as deer, wild boar and even bears. They even track down the game in silence and hold on to its barking until the hunter arrives. The desire to hunt is still very great, so it is not a dog that you can let go of, as it may well find itself pursuing a trail, but also because they will often be a little challenging towards other dogs, and it can quickly end up wrong.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat is a coarse one. However, the breed has a soft and dense undercoat. The length and thickness of the coat suits the climate in the dog's home area. It affects both the amount of fur care and how much it sheds, but in general, if you are thorough with brushing once a week, it should probably work. In terms of feeding, the breeds are very frugal.

Management of the breed

The breed is very attentive and quick to perceive, but given that they are self-employed hunters, they are not much for having to cooperate. However, they are good at adapting to the leader of the herd. They should preferably get used to strangers and also to other dogs from an early age through good socialization. And again, it is important that the dog knows who it is that decides.
