Description of the dog breed

The largest and clearly the heaviest of the hounds, is not a companion dog. It belongs to the active hunters. If through hunting, it satisfies its desire to hunt and its instinct to pursue a trail that it finds interesting, it is very nice, calm and sociable. It is a devoted family dog and strongly attached to the one who works with it. The breed may be somewhat reserved towards strangers and dogs.

A super skilled tracking dog that needs a lot of physical activity and also many tasks where it needs to use its well-functioning nose. If it does not get mental stimulation and good social contact, it does not work,

In ancient times, the Celts hunted with dogs that, while wearing a leash, silently searched and found intriguing traces of game that had been there. Then the barking and drifting hunting dogs were allowed to end the hunt. When firearms had their entry in the 17th century, the interest therefore also disappeared for these so-called guide dogs. They were subsequently given the task of searching for traces of blood from especially shot game (Info: "schweiss" means blood). The three breeds of Schweisshund are today: Hanoverian Hound, and its descendants Bavarian Mountain Hound and Alpine Dachsbracke. Males are 48-57 cm, and females 46-55 cm. They weigh 25-30 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is very patient, enduring and independen. It works really well and is good at concentrating as well as being very persistent. The breed is also very good at having contact with the hunter or owner. It is not a dog to be let loose in places with wild animals such as in the woods, and traffic. Instead, take advantage of its tracking skills by letting it go and sniff in a field or in the woods while wearing a leash!

Fur care and hygiene

The dense fur of the breed is very strong and protects very well against both weather and against tears from branches and thorns on bushes. It is smooth and dense, and seems a bit dull. With regular brushing you can minimize shedding during spring and autumn. The ears are very large and heavy and require some attention once in a while.

Management of the breed

Sports training is a necessity for the dog's mental well-being. Feel free to start early, and change your training environment and rewards once in a while. The learning should very much be friendly, pleasurable and consistent, so make sure to motivate the dog in a good way, because it really wants to work and train with you. If it has good experiences with children and adults early on, it will be less reserved.
