Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is very similar to the other 3 Belgian Shepherd Dogs so the information about Malinois, Tervuren and Laekenois also applies to the black Groenendael and vice versa. They are all lively and attentive dogs that are very closely attached to their owners and they function well as companion dogs in a family that is active and has some dog experience. If it gets plenty of activity and exercise, it is happy, and mental challenges are also really good for it, as well as a good social life. If it is understimulated, it can be difficult to get along with, as the dogs will display restlessness.

The background is common to all the Belgian Shepherd Dogs, and especially the Groenendael and the Tervuren are closely related to each other. It is almost only the color that separates the two breeds from each other, and it can even sometimes, in rare cases, happen that in a litter with Groenendael puppies, a puppy with Tervuren colors appears. In recent times, all breeds have found good use as both handicap dogs but also rescue dogs. The breed is named after a castle south of Brussels. The males are around 60-66 cm tall, and females 56-62 and they weigh about 27-29 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is tireless and a pure competition dog in various dog sports. The dog is very active and strongly lead oriented, but it is also able to work even when the situation requires it. It needs to be socialized as a puppy.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat is very long on the body, legs, tail and around the neck where it is like a collar. On the head, ears and front of its legs, the coat is short. There is not much fur care involved with this breed, and it can be done with a brush once a week.

Management of the breed

The breed is happy and positive, and loves to learn new things and it is easy to raise. It is important to educate this dog consistently, and avoid stressing the dog with excessive rewards when doing something good. It is also important that it is allowed to play between exercises - remember to let the dog calm down first.
