Griffon Petit Brabancon for sale

A Griffon Petit Brabancon is a small guard and companion dog, which originally comes from Brussels in Belgium. The breed is related to Griffon Bruxellois and Griffon Belge, all three of which are descended from the same breed, Smousje, which is a small rough-haired dog breed from Belgium.

Origin and history

The three Griffons all originate from the Belgian dog, Smousje, who originated in the area around Brussels in Belgium a century ago. Around the 19th century, the Smousje was crossed with the King Charles Spaniel and Pug, giving it a black, short-haired coat. There have certainly been other dog breeds involved as well. Back then, in the 19th century, the breed was found all over Belgium. Both in Brussels and other big cities as well as in the countryside. The dog was used to control pests such as rats and mice, which were very bothersome at the time. However, the dog was also used as an ordinary companion dog, where i.a. the Flemish painter, Van Dyck, is said to have been very enthusiastic about it. He has portrayed the breed in paintings up to several times.

Despite the fact that the Griffon Petit Brabancon is a very old dog breed, it only became widespread and popular in the interwar period, which is between World War I and World War II. During that period, many specimens were exported abroad, which helped to spread the breed's popularity worldwide. Today, however, the breed is relatively rare and unknown in the UK and in the rest of Europe, but it is experiencing increasing popularity in the United States.

Appearance and characteristics

Griffon Petit Brabancon does not immediately resemble the other two griffon breeds, Griffon Bruxellois and Griffon Belge, as they are both rough-haired while Griffon Petit Brabancon is short-haired. The breed has probably inherited its short coat from the Pug. A Griffon Petit Brabancon is also a small dog between 18 and 20 cm, weighing 3 to 5 kg, depending on whether it is a male or a female. As metioned, the coat is short and either reddish brown or black with light brown markings. The most characteristic part of the breed is probably the head, which in many ways is very similar to the Pug and is very conspicuous. It is relatively large compared to the rest of the body. The face has almost human-like features.

The eyes are located far apart and they are large and round. The eye color is mostly black, but can also be brown. The ears are small and high set at a good distance from each other. Abroad, the breed is often seen with cutted ears, although this is not allowed in many countries. The breed has the fun detail that the body is roughly as long as the shoulder height, which means that it can look a bit "compacted".

The overall impression of a Griffon Petit Brabancon is a square, robust and unique dog.

Mentality and behavior

The three Belgian Griffons are very similar in temperament. It is only purely in appearance that they really are different from each other. They are all independent dogs that are very self-aware, lively and energetic. They are good at adapting to the environment of which they are a part of, meaning that they can both live in a house and an apartment. However, they are also very vigilant and attentive, however, they are not significantly known for barking. They may be a little reserved towards strangers and other animals. Due to the breed's past as a rat catcher, it is a very lively dog who loves to run, play and tumble around. There is still a good portion of hunting desire hidden in the breed, even though it is no longer used for hunting to today. The breed may well be a bit difficult to breed.

Fur care

As the Griffon Petit Brabancon is short-haired, it does not require much fur care. A good brushing when needed is usually sufficient.
