There are three different breeds called the Belgian Griffons. These are Griffon Bruxellois, Griffon Belge and Petit Brabancon and they all have origins in a small, rough-haired dog called a "Smousie", which originated in the area around Brussels. This dog was bred with a mix of a King Charles Spaniel and a Pug, which has given the breed we know today. It is only the coat, with its different hair layers and colors, that separates the three Belgian Griffons, as otherwise they are very similar in mind and temperament. Therefore, the breeds are basically also kept clean, and are only very rarely mixed with each other. The breeds were initially bred to guard vehicles and chase mice and rats away from the area. Today, the breed is most often seen as a companion and family dog, which it does very well. It is energetic, lively and self-aware, and will tend to be vigilant, especially in its own area. However, it has a relatively subdued bark, and can therefore also work well in an apartment. It will adapt to the family's lifestyle and energy needs, and therefore do well as a companion dog in a family who does not like to be that active. However, there is still a need for daily exercise, but it is enough for the dog with some longer walks where it is allowed to unfold with sniffing and examining. It can also be beneficial to use the walks to train with the dog. In addition, it has a fairly great need for socialization with the family, and will attach close to its family. Size: 18-20 cm. Weight 3.5-6 kg.
Due to its origin as a keeper of the farm, where they performed their work independently, you get an independent dog who loves to run, play and tumble. It also has a lot of desire to hunt. Therefore, they can also easily find themselves moving further away from their owners, if they are given the opportunity. These are not the most obedient dogs and they can be challenging to train. For the most part, however, they maintain reasonably good contact with the owners.
The coat does not require much in terms of fur care. The dog is rough-haired with short, dense and slightly tousled fur. The dog might need a blanket or similar to keep the dog warm in colder weather. On a daily basis, the coat must be kept clean of dirt and knots, but does not necessarily need to be brushed daily. They need to be trimmed three to four times a year and need to be brushed regularly.
It is an independent breed that is not always willing to obey commands when given. On the other hand, under the right circumstances with a good exciting form of training and the right reward, they are teachable and cooperative. Once they have learned a command, they remember it as a starting point, and they often enjoy performing with their skills. With proper training, they can be ideal for obedience and agility.
