Background knowledge of the breed

Only the colors and the dog's hair layer separate the 3 Belgian Griffons from each other. All three breeds are considered as independent breeds and they do not mate with each other. The mentality and physique of the dogs are very much the same. They are confident, conscious and lively, little companion dogs and they are good at adapting to any lifestyle. In addition, they are very vigilant but they do not bark that much, which is good if you live in an apartment. They may be a little dismissive and hesitant towards strangers. The breed likes to go for long walks, and there must be time for it to go outside and sniff around. The dog likes to be close to the family, socially.

The 3 Griffon breeds all descend from a breed called "Smousje", which many hundreds of years ago lived in and around Brussels. In the 19th century, bloodlines from the well-known King Charles Spaniel (Ruby) and Pug were added to the breed, which gave them a black and short-haired coat, and this established the current breed type. The small dogs were very awake and were bred to keep an eye on vehicles, and to keep mice and other things away from the stables. They grow to about 18-20 cm in height and weigh 3.5-6 kg as adults.

The activity level of the breed

They love to be active, so you will definitely have a happy dog if you take it for a run or go outside and play with it. Originally, they were used to hunt mice and rats in the stables, so they still have a hunting desire in them. This is important to remember, as they can be drawn by something and run after it. It is therefore important to raise and train the dog well, so that they will not run away from you or at least listen to your recall.

Fur care and hygiene

Their dense and slightly tousled fur is kept clean and nice with regular brushing. It can also be a good idea to have the dog trimmed a few times a year. You can do the trimming yourself if comfortable with it or you can have a professional do it for you. In general, there is not much fur care involved with this breed. Just remember that a good brushing once in a while is good for them.

Management of the breed

The breed is very teachable and cooperative even though they are very independent and do not always listen at the right times. The dogs love being able to be in contact with people and they enjoy challenges, this could, for example, be agility and obedience training.
