The Griffon Bleu De Gascogne is one of the medium-sized French scent breeds that can be traced back at least 800 years in France. Between these different French breeds, there is rarely a difference in mentality and temperament, and the differences are found almost exclusively in the coat, as color and structure here may be different. They are all, both the rough-haired as well as the short-haired, quite friendly and easy to get along with. They are bred for hunting different game, and they are therefore quite hardy and enduring, and need a high level of activity, and will therefore rarely thrive as companion dogs. As a family dog, they require lots of activity and tasks so that they can have their needs met, both mentally and physically. If this is successful, you can easily get a wonderful family dog in this breed. Since it is a breed bred to follow scents, this need must be met by giving the dog various search tasks and similar activities that really challenge its ability to smell. When their activity needs are met, they are good and sociable, and enjoy close contact with both people and other dogs. Due to their hunting desire, it can be an advantage to have them in a fenced area and provide a good learning environment and routine, as they can be difficult to call back if the hunting instinct is turned on.
The size for males will typically be 50-57 cm; for females 48-55. Weight 20-25 kg.
The breed is bred for hunting all kinds of game, and it is therefore an independent and driven dog. They can be very responsive in order to tell the surroundings which way the hunt is going, so that the hunter can get into the firing range of the prey. As a rule, they want to work together in pairs or flocks, but it can easily work independently over long distances with some contact with its owner. Because of this breeding for hunting, they have a great need for activity and need to be used. This can be done by good, long walks and lots of mental stimulation through playtime where you could get the dog to search for things.
The coat is rough and the dog has an undercoat that protects well in both cold and hot climates. It also protects against cuts and wounds that can occur when in contact with bushes and other obstacles in the rough terrain. It requires a good and thorough brushing on a regular basis. The dog could also use a trimming once in a while. So trim the coat if it is needed, but remember that you must not cut a dog with an undercoat. The ears are relatively large and drooping, and it is important that they are kept free of dirt, dust and hair in the ear canal. It can also be a good idea to gently dry the ears once in a while.
It can certainly be a challenge to train the dog to come back when called. Due to the breed’s great hunting instinct, you will need to implement persistent and consistent training early on, if you want to succeed at calling the dog home. It can be difficult to make contact with the dog once the hunting instinct is turned on. In addition to this challenge, they are generally teachable and willing to work if only the training is performed kindly, varied, consistently and with lots of reward.
