The Greyhound is a dog that enjoys life as a family and companion dog. It is most often gentle and balanced when living with a family. However, it is important that the family meets the dog's needs, especially allowing the dog to meet its great need for running. The dog is generally very aware of its surroundings, and can easily turn on its hunting desire if an exciting smaller animal comes by. It has a great need for contact, and is very grateful for attention and socialization. In general, the dog will do well in connection with strangers and other dogs, but it is a good idea to ensure appropriate socialization, also early in life. The dog needs to be able to run freely and get a lot of exercise on a daily basis, but the need is not always as great as the dog expresses. On the other hand, it has a great need for social contact, and this is important to meet this demand in order to have a dog that thrives well. The breed probably comes from the Middle East, and came to the British Isles as early as 375 BC, probably during the migrations. Images of similar dogs are found in Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire. In recent times, the dog is often used for racing, as it is absolutely fast and happy to run. Where the name comes from is unknown, but it probably comes from Greek or Celtic. The size for males will typically be 71-76 cm; for females 68-71cm. Weight 27-32 kg.
As mentioned, the Greyhound has a certain need to be allowed to run free. However, it can be a great advantage to do so in enclosed areas, as the dog can easily be gripped by its strong hunting instinct and have to run after everything that moves, which can both birds, cats and smaller dogs. It can run very fast, and reach 60 km / h quickly, and can be difficult to call back to you. On the other hand, in most cases, you will want a dog that is calm and relaxed at home.
The coat is smooth and adjacent, and does not provide much protection against colder climates. Therefore, it can be a clear advantage to get a jacket for the dog in the colder and wetter months, so that it can still go outside without being cold. The dog will shed a lot, but it can be kept fairly in check by wiping the dog with a dense brush or with a washcloth, so you can get rid of the loose hair.
In most cases, the dog will be reasonably willing to participate and concentrate in training and upbringing. However, training must be done kindly and consistently, and preferably with varying forms of training. Due to the dog's special physique, sitting is not a natural position for the dog and it should not be forced to do so for too long. In order to overcome difficulties with recall, it is important to start training it very early on and put a lot of emphasis on recall.
