Background knowledge of the breed

This breed is a real nature dog with all that it entails. The breed is therefore only suitable as a family dog when we are talking about people who have great dog experience as well as profound understanding of the dog breed. The dog is very energetic, alert and mentally robust, and works really well with both adults and children. It is a very curious dog who loves to be part of a pack, in this case, the family or several dogs. The breed has a great need to be able to run and pull. The social life is also really important for this dog and outdoor activities can be really good for it. This dog really likes to be outside as it is part of its history as a sled dog.

This is one of the world's oldest dog breeds, which for many years has been used for transport and as a hunting tool. The breed is still found in North Greenland, but here the breeding of the dog is a bit left to itself. Only the healthiest and strongest dogs survive under the harsh conditions under which they live. Therefore, it is only the strongest dogs that will carry on the bloodline. For man, this breed has been a working tool and it has not received the same level of care that other dog breeds have. The focus has only been to maintain the dog’s ability to pull the heavy sledges.

The males become at least 60 cm tall, the females at least 55 cm. They weigh 30-32 kg.

The activity level of the breed

These dogs can not be raised after puppy age, as they do not understand that cats and other animals that are smaller than them, are not something they should hunt. However, they are very affectionate towards people and they are good at respecting upbringing and different environments.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat is coarse with stride cover hair over a nice soft undercoat. It sheds a lot once a year. After that period, you will need to brush it regularly when the coat requires it. The coat protects really well in all conditions, and the dog prefers to be outdoors all year round.

Management of the breed

To raise this dog requires some patience and consistency. The breed will really benefit from being able to pull a sled in the winter. Otherwise, it will also be really good for the dog to run next to a bike and in that way get to use his body in a meaningful way.
