Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a robust and powerful dog with a calm, nice mind. It is very reliable, good-natured and affectionate, and confident towards the family. However, due to its size alone, it is hardly a breed for first-time dog owners. It is used as a watchdog, as it is alert and brave. It is a bit repulsive to strangers, and it is often not very friendly when meeting other dogs, so it is not a dog you just walk in the dog forest with. However, it enjoys being social with the family. The breed requires regular exercise, challenging employment and a lot of space in the household. It needs early socialization and close human contact, so that the guard instincts do not take over and become dominant.

The largest of the mountain dogs, and possibly also the oldest as well as a descendant of the Roman Mastiffs. For hundreds of years, it was the working dog for itinerant traders, and the watchdog for the peasants and the cattle driver for the butchers. The breed was first recognized in 1910, after being considered a short-haired Bernese Mountain Dog for a short time. During World War II, the Swiss Army trained and used the breed for several purposes, and it has also later proved useful as a tracking and avalanche dog for which it has been used extensively. Males grow to around 65-72 cm, and females 60-68 cm. The dog will reach a weight around 55-60 kg when fully grown.

The activity level of the breed

The hunting instinct of the breed is very restrained, despite being large. It adheres primarily to its territory and its people, and it does not tend to roam, even though it has hunting instincts. It would be a good idea to have a fence in the garden and in the household anyway, because the big dog can easily knock over children and older people, so it is a good idea for ensuring safety around the house, especially when having visitors.

Fur care and hygiene

The double coat consists of a thick short to half-length outer coat over a very dense undercoat, which protects the dog well in all kinds of weather. Fur care is very doable and easy. A thorough brushing once in a while will sufficiently remove dust and loose hair that may be sitting.

Management of the breed

At times, it may be a bit slow in perception, but it really likes to learn new things and tricks, and once the learning is in place, it never forgets what it has learned. Adapt the training to the dog's own pace and reward it with good treats. Pressing the dog too hard will only lead to stubbornness, so it is definitely not a good idea to be too demanding when training a dog of this breed.
