A Great Dane is a dog that, due to its mild temperament, kindness, and loyalty, is especially suitable as a companion and family dog. It will also forge close bonds with its people where it is kind and loving towards the whole family, which often works really well with children to whom it also attaches close. Towards strangers and other dogs, it may be a little more cautious, but this can be remedied with training, especially early socialization. Due to its size, however, the dog needs plenty of space, and will probably not thrive in an apartment or a house without a garden. In addition, also due to the size and growth, great consideration must be given to dogs' need for food and physical activity during the period of growing up. This implies an increasing need for exercise during adulthood. The name for the breed was formed as the dog was especially bred in the Danish royal stables at Frederiksborg, as early as the 16th century. However, in Germany in 1878, it was decided to combine the different varieties into one breed, with the name Deutsche Dogge. The size of the dog generally varies greatly depending on age and sex, but will for males will typically be at least 80 cm; for bitches 50-75 cm. Weight 50-75 kg.
Originally, the Great Dane was used as a hunting dog, and it still retains its hunting instincts. Therefore, one must be aware, especially when playing with smaller dogs, that the playtime does not develop into hunting. In addition, it is also important to train recall early, as you might need it if the hunting instinct is turned on. Like all working dogs, the Great Dane has a relatively great need for exercise and intellectual stimulation, so it does not get bored and finds itself in trouble. Therefore, it is important to provide exercise and stimulation, and you can advantageously incorporate different forms of training and play into the training.
The Great Dane does not have the protective undercoat as seen with many other dogs, meaning that it does not have the same ability to acclimatize at changing temperatures. The short, dense and smooth coat does not require the large coat care, but to reduce the amount of shedding, you should wipe the dog over with a damp cloth or a dense brush, as this will remove the worst of the loose hair. This is also an advantage as the stiff hairs can be difficult to remove from furniture and other textiles. It only needs a daily wipe with a damp washcloth, otherwise it will shed quite a bit. The stiff hairs have an annoying ability to drill vertically into furniture and carpets, where they can be difficult to remove.
The Great Dane is a breed that is easy to train and educate if you start training from a young age and implement the correct routine. It is a good idea to start training and socializing early, as the puppy will be easy to handle and extremely willing to learn. Make sure to educate kindly but consistently, and in short sequences.
