Background knowledge of the breed

This breed will work really well with most families who want a happy and loyal companion dog. It is generally very loving and loyal to its family, and good-natured and patient with the children of the family. It will typically adapt to life as a family dog, but it also requires that the dog's needs be taken into account. Despite being basically an independent dog, it requires close contact, and will not be happy to be left alone for extended periods of time. Like many other dogs, it has a great need to be active in everyday life, and it will benefit from being mentally stimulated, especially with tasks that utilize its good sense of smell. It is a dog that thrives best when it has the opportunity for close contact with the family, but it will also be well suited to having another playmate, i.e. in a family with several dogs. As with the other Bassets, it is bred from larger hunting dogs, and has probably given rise to the breed called Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen; the two breeds are built largely alike, but the Grand Basset  has longer legs, and is thus larger. The breed is still used for hunting wild game, and this can be used to advantage if you acquire one. It works well in most terrains and weather conditions. After the French Revolution, the breed had almost disappeared, but was rebuilt due to interest in exploiting in particular its characteristics for hunting. The size of male will typically be 29-45 cm; for females 38-44 cm. Weight 18-20 kg.

The activity level of the breed

This breed has a moderate hunting instinct, and will therefore enjoy being allowed to be physically active, and it would be very happy to be allowed to join the hunt. It can be a challenge to call the dog back to you if it gets the hang of a prey, even with thorough upbringing and training. It can have a tendency to bark a lot, especially when playing or hunting.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is smooth, lies flat, is relatively short and is reasonably easy to keep clean and pretty. It does not require much work - you can easily keep free from dirt with a weekly brushing. The coat does not need trimming, but if you prefer a nice trimmed dog, you can do it yourself or get help from professionals. Due to the long, adjacent ears, it is important to keep the ear canal clean and free of hair.

Management of the breed

In general, the dog is cooperative and concentrated, and when a command is learned, the dog typically remembers them. On the other hand, the learning process can be a bit challenging and time consuming, and as a dog owner, a lot of patience is needed. The training works best when done in short sequences with changing types of training. The dog is happy to work and the training is made fun when including plenty of rewards. It can be an advantage to include hunting as part of the training, due to the dog's history as a hunting dog.
