Buy Gos d'Atura Catala

A Gos d'Atura Catala, or Catalan Shepherd Dog as it is also called, is a dog breed that originated in the eastern part of the Pyrenees in the province of Catalonia in Spain. Here the breed has been used as a shepherd dog for hundreds of years. Still to this day, the dog is used to herding sheep and cattle in the area.

Origin and history

The breed was first registered in the Spanish Dog Register in 1915, although it has existed long before that in the northern Spanish province of Catalonia. Here it has herded sheep and other cattle under harsh weather conditions for many years. This has meant that the breed has developed a toughness that is rarely seen at this level in other dogs. A Gos d'Atura Catala can thus withstand both high heat and cold. In the local area around the Pyrenees where the breed originally originated, you will find that there are several different varieties of the breed. However, they all belong to the same race. Due to the breed's independent mind and calm temperament, it has also been used for purposes other than shepherd dogs, for example as a police and military dog as well as to drive horses. Finally, the breed has also been used for various types of guarding tasks over time. After World War II, the breed's popularity dropped drastically - in fact so much that it was close to extinction. Fortunately, a group of dedicated breeders managed to save and restore the breed. However, it is still very rare outside Spain.

Appearance and characteristics of the Gos d'Atura Catala

A Gos d'Atura Catala is a medium-sized dog that weighs between 17 and 19 kg when fully grown. The males are between 47 and 55 cm tall while the females are between 43 and 53 cm tall. The breed has a robust physique and a long, rough coat, which can be both straight or wavy. In addition, the breed can be recognized by its very long mustache and bangs, which are often so long that it shadows the eyes. The coat color is typically a mixture of beige, white, black or gray, but can also have a reddish color.

Mentality and behavior

A Gos d'Atura Catala is a working dog with a high energy level and activity needs. If you have a Gos d'Atura Catala, you will never get bored. The breed is tireless and will follow its owner through all kinds of terrain and weather. The breed is therefore a great companion for the active family who spend many hours, every day out in nature. A Gos d'Atura Catala is also a fantastic family dog, as it is both calm and affectionate towards children that it loves to play with. However, it may well be a bit skeptical of strangers.

It is a dog that requires a lot of exercise every day. You must be prepared for this before buying a Gos d'Atura Catala. It is not a dog that just lies on the couch and relaxes all day. On the other hand, it would prefer to stay outside and be active. If the dog is not sufficiently employed, it will quickly get bored which can lead to dissatisfaction.

Although a Gos d'Atura Catala loves its family, it is also a very independent breed that likes to go its own ways. Therefore, a Gos d'Atura Catala requires an experienced owner who is able to train and educate it. Many owners of Catalan shepherd dogs go to agility, which the breed is particularly suitable for.

Fur care and hygiene

The long coat of the breed must be brushed regularly to avoid tangling and difficult knots in the fur. However, there is also a very rare short-haired variant of the breed, which requires significantly less fur care. You can advantageously trim the dog's bangs and beard so that it does not get too long.

Health and disease

The average life expectancy of a Gos d'Atura Catala is 12 to 14 years. It is not a dog that is known for hereditary diseases.
