Background knowledge of the breed

Despite the fact the Gordon Setter may not be a breed for a completely inexperienced dog owner, it can fit quite well into the modern family. It will often forge a closer bond with one specific person in the family, but will still function well with the rest of the family. The breed often has a tendency to be a little more reluctant when it meets strangers, especially other dogs. Therefore, there is a need for the owner to ensure early socialization of the dog so that it can get used to meeting other dogs and especially children. Therefore, there may also be an advantage in choosing a breeder who takes care of socializing the puppy when it is quite small, as it will help a lot. The breed needs lots of movement and training, so it can cover its need for exercise and mental stimulation. In addition, it is a breed that has a great social need in the family. This means that the breed may not just fit in as a companion dog in a quiet family, but it can easily work for a family that can offer a lot of exercise, different forms of training and challenges, and close socialization. The breed is the only Setter from Scotland where it had a particular advantage, as it is strongly built and could easily engage in the more difficult terrain. Along with a great hunting instinct, the breed was perfect for hunting in Scotland. The breed as we know it today, with its black and red colors, emerged in the late 18th century when Dukes of Richmond and Gordon created from the older type, which by appearance was primarily white with black and brown remarks. The breed is also named after this. The size will typically be approximately 66 cm for males; for females 62 cm. Weight: 20-30 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed has a relatively large need for movement and stimulation. The dog wants lots of energy, and can easily move independently over greater distances. However, as the dog was bred for hunting, it often has good contact with the driver.

Fur care and hygiene

There will be a need for styling of the coat most days. Especially, the longer areas need to be cleaned of filters and dirt from the outside. The rest of the coat, which is moderate in length and smoothly adjoining, will need brushing about once a week to keep a nice and shiny coat.

Management of the breed

It is important for the development of a well-functioning dog that it is properly socialized, both with new people, children and other dogs. This socialization must persist until it is sexually mature in order to keep up the good habits. There is a great need for upbringing and mental stimulation. It is crucial that upbringing and training begin early and consistently. It can be a good idea to train with different training techniques, but remember to include short and fast-paced sequences. Reward is important for the dog's learning. Most will enjoy retrieval and summons, and this can be especially utilized in training.
