Background knowledge of the breed

The Golden Retriever is an ideal family dog. With its welcoming and trusting temperament, it is generally kind to people and happy for the children of the family. The dog is a contact seeker and seeks company in its surroundings, and will enjoy contact and attention from the entire family. The breed requires upbringing, physical exercise and mental stimulation in its everyday life, but no more than what the average dog owner and family will be able to cope with. There are generally no major differences in temperament between males and females; both sexes will fit perfectly in a family, and are generally kind to and agree with other dogs of both sexes. In addition to being ideal as a family dog, the breed is also used as a working dog, especially in hunting. The Golden Retriever is bred for hunting, where it has good contact with its hunter or owner, and is especially suitable for use in such situations. The Golden Retriever breed was bred between England and Scotland in the late 1800s, presumably by crossing between a yellow Labrador Retriever, Irish Setter and the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Especially for hunting, it became popular, due to its gentle way of retrieving the birds. Today, the breed is still used for hunting dogs, and as a working dog for e.g. police work, rescue or service work. The breed is especially popular as a family dog. In recent times, the breeding of this breed has gone in two different directions, with some focusing on the appearance and obedience of the dogs, which are typically later used for shows, while others breed working dogs that especially emphasize the hunting characteristics. As the future owner of a golden retriever, it is important to talk to the breeders about what traits they are breeding and which dog will fit into your family.

The breed will grow to a height of 51-61 cm and weigh between 27-36 kg, depending on gender.

The activity level of the breed

In many cases, the Golden Retriever is a working dog that is primarily used for hunting. Here, its task is to retrieve birds that have been slaughtered, as instructed by the hunter or owner. Therefore, the breed is very responsive and attentive with close contact to its owner. The breed is also good as a beloved family dog, as it is calm and easy to raise and keep within a defined framework.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat, which is smooth or slightly wavy, has an undercoat that is well insulating and water-repellent, which helps to keep the dog warm. The dog has modestly more fur on the chest and on the back of the legs, and longer and fuller fur on the underside of the neck. The coat does not require much work, but it will need brushing on a regular basis. The dog sheds moderately, and will shed more in some periods. Regular brushing of the coat will alleviate the shedding.

Management of the breed

The Golden Retriever has great potential to become an excellent obedience dog. With regular training with kindness, reward and consistency, the Golden Retriever is a cooperative dog that is easy to raise. They are generally happy with most forms of exercise. A characteristic of the breed is that they are happy to carry around different things in their mouth, and this can be easily exploited in training. Moreover, most of this breed are also fond of water.
