Background knowledge of the breed

This breed is not a small dog. The dog is a large dog, but with small legs. A super tough and robust breed that should be able to quietly go underground and completely pull a badger, fox or even an otter out of its nest. As a companion dog, the breed requires a very active and sporty family, from which the very happy and hardy dog can get plenty of exercise and stimulation, both physically and mentally. The breed is a fearless daredevil, who needs a lot of exercise as well as good and exciting employment. It will also need an owner who can set some clear boundaries for what the dog should be in charge of, also in relation to the meeting with other dogs and people.

The rarest of the Irish Terriers is a rather old breed of unknown origin. The breed is named after the valley Glen of Imaal in the Wicklow Mountains, which is found in Ireland. At the time, the dog's main task was grave hunting, and, in addition, it was also useful as a retrieving dog on, for example, bird hunts and functioned very well as a watchdog and pest controller on the surrounding farms. The breed was also used for various dog fights, however, that was when this "sport" was still allowed, and it has left its mark on the dog's relationship with other dogs, as it can unfortunately behave aggressively and challengingly towards them. The breed is about 35.5 cm for both sexes and weighs 15-17 kg.

The activity level of the breed

This breed mostly adapts its needs and requirements for exercise according to the family activity level. The dog loves water and is a very skilled and also very enduring swimmer. The breed is independent and very eager to hunt, so it is important that the contact and relationship with the owner is really good so it can be controlled.

Fur care and hygiene

The dog's rough-haired coat is almost completely waterproof and protects really well against all kinds of weather. The dog should be brushed once in a while, preferably weekly and then trimmed 3-4 times a year. The breed is one of those terriers where you can learn to trim it yourself after trying a few times. If the dog's coat is well-groomed, it will not shed that much.

Management of the breed

A dog that needs a consistent upbringing, however, without coercion. Let the training change with play for short periods, so that the dog gets a break, which will also give it new motivation. A fairly early socialization with other dogs and humans, and a well-thought-out choice of playmates for the adult dog is a really good idea.
