Buy German Wirehaired Pointer

A German Wirehaired Pointer, or Deutsche Drahthaar as the breed is called in German, is a dog breed within hunting dogs that originally originated in Germany. A German Wirehaired Pointer is a so-called standing hunting dog, which means that it scans the terrain and when the game is tracked. The dog will instinctively lie down on the ground to try to hide, after which the dog remains standing (standing) and marks opposite the hunter where the game is.

Origin and history

The German Wirehaired Pointer originates, probably not so surprisingly, from Germany. The German Wirehaired Pointer is actually used for hunting chickens, such as pheasants and partridges. Many people mistakenly believe that the four types of chicken dogs; the old Danish Chicken Dog, the German Wirehaired Pointer, the Short-haired Chicken Dog and the Long-haired Chicken Dog are all the same breed, but just different varieties. However, this is not the case. There are, however, four different dog breeds, each with their own appearance and characteristics. The German Wirehaired Pointer was created in the 19th century in Germany. The goal was to create a robust and hardy hunting dog, which would be used for various forms of hunting, but also to track down game that had been shot or injured. It should be able to retrieve from both water and land and be strong enough to be able to take up the fight against foxes and deer at the same time. The result was the German Wirehaired Pointer as we know it today, and which is one of the most popular hunting dog breeds, both in the dog's country of origin, Germany, but also in the UK.

Appearance and characteristics

A German Wirehaired Pointer is a large dog breed that weighs between 27 and 32 kg and is between 61 and 68 cm tall. The females are slightly smaller than the males. The coat is short, hard and rough with a good undercoat, which is typically liver-colored with white markings. The coat is also water-repellent and gives the dog excellent protection against all kinds of weather.

The dog is especially known for its distinctive beard, both mustache and chin beard as well as fluttering ears.

Behavior and character

A German Wirehaired Pointer is a dog with a distinct hunting instinct and great hunting joy. It is therefore a dog with a great need for activity and with lots of energy. You do not necessarily have to go hunting to have a German Wirehaired Pointer, but then you have to make sure to activate the dog in other ways. The dog is therefore well suited for the active family, who for example go for long walks or are otherwise active outside, where the dog can participate. One must be prepared for the fact that it is a dog that needs a lot of exercise every day to thrive. If the dog is not exercised enough, it will become frustrated and become restless, destructive and difficult to handle. It is therefore not a dog that is suitable for living in an apartment. The German Wirehaired Pointer is also a very good watchdog, as it has a natural skepticism and restraint towards strangers. It will quite naturally guard and take care of its family. If the dog has been socialized from puppy, it can do fine with other dogs as well as young children.

Health, illness and care

A German Wirehaired Pointer is a dog with a moderate need for fur care. An occasional brushing as needed is sufficient. In addition, the coat can be trimmed once or twice a year.

As the fur is dirt-repellent, it rarely needs to be washed.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is generally a healthy dog breed that rarely gets sick. Nor is it a breed known to have congenital or hereditary diseases. The average lifespan of a German Wirehaired Pointer is 9 to 12 years. If the dog has been used a lot for hunting, the lifespan can be a bit shorter.
