Background knowledge of the breed

The two German breeds differ from each other only in size and color. They are both self-aware, affectionate, loyal to the family and patient with children, but can be a little suspicious of strangers and not very tolerant of other dogs. As companion dogs, they require a great deal of dog experience. The breed requires an early and careful socialization to accustom it to foreign dogs and humans and to curb the urge to bark. They appreciate exercise and like to spend time outdoors. The German Spitz are descendants of the Stone Age peat dog, from which numerous other breeds are also descendants of. From the Middle Ages, they were a regular part of life on the farms, where they kept watch, took rats and mice and acted as shepherd dogs. The landowners tolerated the dogs because they were uninterested in game and could not be trained as hunting dogs. They still fit their original work, while the role of companion dogs is almost completely taken over by the two smallest variants of the breed and by the slightly larger Keeshond. The breed grows to around 42-50 cm in height and weighs between 17-19 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed's keen attention and lack of interest in hunting, makes it a reliable guardian of all that it is entrusted with. The dog is very closely attached to his family, likes to follow directions and is not inclined to go his own ways.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat effectively protects in all kinds of weather. It is half-length with slightly protruding cover hairs over a dense undercoat, which is much fuller in the winter than in the summer. The coat sheds a lot and tends to filter, and it must therefore be brushed thoroughly at regular intervals.

Management of the breed

The medium-sized German Spitz can often be a little self-willed, so the breed is not entirely easy to breed. Avoid harsh methods, but always be kind, consistent, fair and inventive with rewards. Train in short, varied fast-paced sequences.
