Buy German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a dog breed that is originally from Germany, where it originated in the late 1800s. Today, the dog is one of the most popular dog breeds worldwide, and is especially known for being used by police and military all over the world, including the UK.

Origin and history

The breed was created in the late 1800s by the German dog breeder, Max von Stephanitz, by mating different types of German sheepdogs. The purpose was to create a working dog that could work as a service dog for the police and military. The breed was first shown at a show in Germany in 1892, and just nine years later, in 1901, the first German Shepherd was approved as a police dog in Germany. In the following years, the breed's popularity increased dramatically and the breed is one of the most popular dog breeds in the world today. The German breed club for the German Shepherd is thus the world's largest breed club for any dog breed with over 85,000 members.

Appearance and characteristics of the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a large, muscular and strongly built dog, which has a sloping body where the lumbar region is significantly lower than shoulder height.

The males are typically 60 to 65 cm tall, while the females are 55 to 60 cm tall. The German Shepherd weighs from approx. 25 kg to 40 kg. The head is wedge-shaped with pointed, erect ears. The tail is long and bushy. The coat is dense with a strong undercoat and black-brown in various shades, e.g. wolf gray or black. However, the breed is also available in a long-haired variant, which is officially accepted by both the British and international dog organizations. The white variant, on the other hand, is not recognized by FCI or many other international Kennel Clubs. In recent years, the appearance of the breed has changed a lot, where the lumbar region has continuously become more and more sloping. The German Shepherd therefore does not look as it did 30, 40 or 50 years ago. The more sloping lumbar region is probably one of the reasons why the dog is at risk of developing hip and elbow problems.

Mentality and behavior

It is not without reason that the German Shepherd is one of the world's most popular dog breeds. The German Shepherd is an incredibly versatile dog that can take on a multitude of different tasks, but is also used for many different purposes. The dog can function both as a companion and family dog, as a watchdog, as a service and working dog or for the active family who takes the dog on walks and outdoor activities. The German Shepherd is a clever, vigilant, curious and loyal dog, which should preferably be socialized with other dogs and children from the time it is a puppy. It is a dog that requires a firm but loving hand and should preferably be raised by an experienced dog owner. A poorly handled German Shepherd can become suspicious, nervous and aggressive towards strangers. It is also a dog that requires daily exercise and activation. A German Shepherd that gets bored and does not get drained of its energy can become tense and destructive. It is therefore important that the dog gets good exercise on a daily basis. A well-trained and well-behaved German Shepherd is a fantastic dog, both as a loving family dog for the family with children, and as a sporty working dog for the active family.

Taking care of the German Shepherd

The German Shepherd's coat is medium length with a dense undercoat and therefore requires a good brushing regularly. However, the dog still sheds quite a lot. In addition, the dog's ears should be inspected and cleaned if necessary, just as the claws are checked and cut as needed.

Health and disease

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common diseases that the German Shepherd suffers from. However, elbow problems are also seen on a regular basis. In addition, some German Shepherds tend to develop allergies. The German Shepherd typically grows between 10 and 14 years old.
