Buy German Pinscher

The German Pinscher is an old dog breed that originally originated in Germany. Throughout history, the dog has had various purposes, including to kill vermin such as rats, shepherd dogs, guard dogs and for hunting. Today, the dog is especially used in dog sports.

Origin and history

The German Pinscher is believed to be descended from ancient European shepherds and guard dogs. It is believed that the breed has existed since the end of the 18th century, but perhaps as far back as the 16th century. In the 19th century, the breed was very popular where it i.a. was used to guard and protect wagons with people from highway robbers as well as to kill pests such as rats on the farms. The German Pinscher has the same background as the Schnauzer, and once both dogs were born in the same litter. However, they later chose to separate the two varieties so that they became separate breeds. This division took place in the late 1800s. There are different views as to where the name “Pinscher” comes from. Some believe that the name comes from German, where the word Pinscher means "to bite", while others believe that the name comes from the English pinch, which means 'to nibble” and refers to the dog's clipped ears, which were clipped to avoid other animals biting into them. Finally, there are some who believe that Pinscher is derived from the French word "pincer", which means "to bite off", referring to the breed's past as a rat dog.

Appearance and characteristics

The German Pinscher is a medium-sized dog that is 45 to 50 cm tall and weighs between 13 and 18 kg. It has clear, marked muscles, an elongated snout and easily folded ears. Previously, the ears were cropped and the tail docked, which, however, is illegal in many countries as well as the dog's country of origin, Germany. The coat is short, dense and smooth and can be either reddish brown in various shades (although this is rare) or black with rust red markings on the abdomen and chest, which is the most common color for a Pinscher. The breed has a proud and elegant posture, which clearly exudes the dog's self-confidence. It expresses strength and courage, which is also expressed when it runs or walks.

Behavior and character

The German Pinscher's past as a rat dog can still be experienced in the dog to this day, where it can be seen searching for rats in larger areas. If it finds one, one can be sure that it is not alive for long. A Pinscher equals a rat-free home. Despite its past as a rat killer, the Pinscher is a loving and sensitive dog, which is very suitable as a family dog. Here it will guard and protect its family from all outsiders, as it possesses a quite large guard instinct. Although the breed is not quite as impressive as, for example, a Dobermann, a Pinscher with its confident and muscular appearance will probably scare most burglars away.

The breed is also very suitable for various types of dog sports due to its lively and energetic nature. In general, the breed is incredibly happy with pretty much all kinds of activities. It is therefore a dog that should be exercised every day, as it will otherwise easily be understimulated and get bored. However, the German Pinscher may well be a bit stubborn and not always equally responsive to commands. It is therefore a dog that needs to be trained thoroughly, preferably from a very young age. It is not a dog suitable for inexperienced dog owners. If you spend your time and energy on the dog, you will in turn also get a gracious and faithful companion for the rest of your life.

Health, illness and fur care

The German Pinscher is generally a very healthy and fit dog, which is not known to have congenital or hereditary diseases. And with its short and smooth coat, it is not a dog that requires much fur care.

The average lifespan of a German Pinscher is 12 to 14 years.
