The Spanish Greyhound, as the breed is also called, is generally a sweet companion dog, but it can also be a little unapproachable if you do not know how to tame it. However, the breed can belong to an active family if the family has dog experience and understanding of the needs and special character of this type of dog. The breed is most often attached to a specific person in the family, and it is a bit self-willed. The breed is vigilant and somewhat dismissive of strangers that it does not know. The breed has a great need for healthy and long walks as well as the opportunity to run freely. Because of these needs of exercise, it would be great if you have a larger and securely fenced area available. It will thrive best if it is allowed to live in a place where it can run around freely and use some of its natural instincts. The breed is certainly a descendant of ancient Asian Spitzs and very reminiscent of a Sloughi. It has been known since antiquity, but there is reason to believe that it came to the Iberian Peninsula much earlier. From the 16th century to the 18th century, it was largely introduced in countries such as Ireland and England, and it is probably part of the basis for today's Greyhound. In Spain, the Galgo is still used as a hunting and racing dog, and it is often crossed with a Greyhound, which is slightly larger and somewhat faster. The breed grows to 62-70 cm with a weight of 20-30 kg.
The breed is known to be an energetic and lively hunting dog, which likes to run out on great distances if it catches sight of a possible prey. It likes to move over large areas completely effortlessly if it has prey in sight. It requires either early and persistent training or an effective fence to keep the fierce desire to hunt under control, if one can not overcome the persistent training when it is a puppy and young dog.
The breed's coat is fine, short and smooth and is kept free of dust and loose hair with a daily wipe with a damp cloth. However, there is also a rough-haired variant of the breed with hard and longer fur that has a tendency to grow a light beard.
From the earliest age of the puppy, it must learn to get along with strangers and other dogs in order to overcome its distinct reservation, which the breed unfortunately possesses. Further upbringing requires patience, kindness and consistency.
