Background knowledge of the breed - English Cocker Spaniel-FT

An FT Springer Spaniel is bred exclusively for hunting work. The breed has an innately high stress level and part of the daily training must consist of learning calm and self-control, as the high level stress can otherwise become a significant problem with this breed. The FT Springer Spaniel is not only suitable as a companion dog, not even for the otherwise active family. Therefore, this breed is not exclusively suitable for a life as a companion dog or family dog. It is also not particularly suitable for the active family, and it will definitely not thrive in a family that is quite inactive. It is simply not enough with a family that otherwise goes for long walks and runs. The breed is active and eternally happy. It is always in a great mood with a high pace to match it. Although the breed is not suitable exclusively as a family dog, they are very affectionate in relation to its owner, and it would very much like to please the people with whom it lives. The breed has a great need for contact with its fellow human beings, and a good thing about the breed is that it does not tend to be aggressive towards other dogs and fellow species. At that point, the breed is pretty uncomplicated, which is a clear advantage. The breed is bred as working dogs, and has an innate need to be targeted with hunting work that lies so deep in its nature. When the breed is activated correctly, it works well as a family dog if you have a little experience of keeping a dog. Spaniels date back to the 12th century where they were not originally considered independent breeds. However, in the 19th century, they were divided into two groups. Dogs over 11 kg were flushers who had to chase the game up. The smaller ones were called retrievers, and they had to both travel and retrieve. They were mainly used for hunting Woodcocks. Originally, the Cocker Spaniel is from Wales and the South of England where it was recognized as a breed in the year 1892. Some people still use the breed for hunting, although they are mostly kept as companion dogs in today's society. The breed grows to about 39-41 cm with a weight of 12-14 kg. However, this can vary a bit as it depends on the gender where the females are often a little smaller in stature.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is bred to move underneath the shotgun when hunting, which means that the dog must stay within a radius of about 10-15 meters from its owner or hunter. The breed has a distinct interest in game, especially about birds. This old instinct is located just under the skin, so the FT Springer Spaniel must learn basic obedience at an early age. The training should be mainly focused on call backs, as you will risk the dog roaming the area in search of prey. However, the fact is that the Red Cocker has the strongest desire to hunt, and it can therefore also be somewhat vigilant. It is a good idea to keep this in mind when looking for a dog of this breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The vast majority of dogs from this breed have shorter coats than the standard breeds. The coat is smooth and usually requires nothing more than a light brushing once in a while. You will also need to cut the coat between the toes on the paws, which is quite easy in terms of fur care.

Management of the breed

Some dogs of the breed can be very gentle, while the gentleness can become insecurity towards humans and dogs.
