The breed is considered to be the most elegant of the existing retriever breeds. The breed is a nimble and active dog that you can not help but to love unconditionally. The breed has a close bond with its family, and it is also loving and indulgent with the family's children, which is a good trait the breed possesses. When it comes to strangers and other dogs, it is friendly and accommodating - in other words, the breed is quite uncomplicated. It is a good dog among the people who know how to live up to its demands that the breed makes to its owner. It is important to understand the needs of the breed. A Flatcoated Retriever needs very close contact with the family, a lot of physical exercise and many tasks that stimulate it mentally. It loves to use its nose and to pick up, bring and carry things. When the Canadian St. John’s Water Dog, the ancestor of the labrador retriever, came to England in the early 1800s, it was probably crossed with several different bird dog breeds and perhaps also with Collies. The result was a hunting dog with thicker and more wavy fur than today's breed. By the turn of the century, the Flatcoated Retriever was the most popular retriever until the golden one was singled out as an independent breed. Today, it is still valued for many purposes and as a family and companion dog. The breed grows to 59-62 cm with a weight of 25-36 kg.
A Flatcoated Retriever is quite active in its young years, but later in life, it calms down more and adjusts to the family's activity level. It has a bit stronger hunting instinct than the Labrador and Golden Retriever as you know it, but it can be handled through sensible upbringing and proper employment, if you know how to handle a dog of this breed.
The coat of the breed is dense, smooth, shiny and fine in structure. The breed's fur protects well in most weather conditions, but perhaps a little less against stiff and thorny vegetation, which you should be aware of if you are walking the dog in such terrain. The fur care is manageable, and a thorough weekly brushing and trimming of the tabs will be enough caretaking.
The breed is very attentive as well as always happy to learn and cooperate. This also contributes to the fact that upbringing rarely creates any big problems.
