A Finnish Lapphund has many of its original instincts from the time as a shepherd dog and watchdog, but today it also finds itself well-suited in an active family who knows how to activate the dog in the best possible way. A Finnish Lapphund is generally a friendly and faithful friend who is also patient with children. The breed is also calm and relaxed in the company of strangers, and it is actually quite uncomplicated to deal with, as it is social towards both humans, fellow dogs and animals. A Finnish Lapphund is a wonderful breed that to an extent greatly appreciates company. It also attaches itself very closely to the whole family. Despite this, it actually also enjoys being alone if it gets enough physical exercise and meaningful employment that can strengthen the breed mentally. For millennia, the Sami followed the wild reindeer over enormous distances, often far into Siberia, to obtain meat and skins. They captured them using dogs. It was not until the 19th century, dogs were given the task of guarding and driving herds of semi-domesticated reindeer. When interest in the original dog breeds awoke, both Sweden and Finland claimed the Sami reindeer dog, and this led to today's division of the breed. Today, the Finnish Lapphund is still used as a shepherd dog, now also for sheep. A Finnish Lapphund is characterized by its bristly fur. The coat is characterized as an arctic coat that helps to insulate against the harsh weather that prevails up north. Therefore, a Finnish Lapphund is really good at keeping warm even in very low temperatures, and this makes the breed quite enduring. The tail will also have long hairs and be thick to look at. It will typically be curved inwards towards the dog's back. This dog breed is characterized by a relatively broad head with a medium or short snout. In addition, it is very happy and friendly to look at, and it has some beautiful expressive eyes that you just can not stand. When it comes to the color of the breed, a Finnish Lapphund comes in many different colors and versions. However, the breed will typically have a dominant color where there may be areas with a different color in the head, on the chest and in the ears. Among the dominant colors are often seen; black, red, cream and brown. The breed grows to about 46-52 cm with a weight of 19-21 kg.
A Finnish Lapphund is an active dog who also possesses a large portion of job satisfaction. For that reason, the breed is suitable for almost all types of dog sports. The shepherd instinct is strong, and the ingenuity is great when it tries to get a drain for it, and that is what you have to be prepared for if you want this breed. It must be said, however, that the desire to hunt is subdued today.
The breed fur is full-bodied, waterproof and well insulating with a long, straight and coarse coat over a soft and dense undercoat. The coat is significantly fuller in the cold weather, and it can shed a lot when the season turns. The fur care consists of thorough brushing on a regular basis, but otherwise, the fur care is manageable.
A Finnish Lapphund is intelligent, smart, hardworking and happy to learn new things. It is a good idea to start raising the dog early to dampen the shepherd dog instinct, which lies quite deep within the breed, thereby limiting its desire to bark.
