Background knowledge of the breed

If the breed becomes busy enough, you can achieve a fairly good-natured and balanced dog that is also calm and affectionate in the family as well as kind to the family's children in general. It can have a somewhat strained relationship with people that it does not know, and it rarely gets along well with other male dogs, which is important to be aware of if you want a dog of this breed. The breed can, however, adapt to a very active family, but thrives absolutely best as a hunting dog where it only has to deal with one human.

The breed is a bit demanding as it needs a lot of exercise and employment, which stimulates it mentally. It would be great if these tasks gives it the opportunity to use its fine sense of smell that the breed possesses. The breed was developed in Finland during the 19th century on the basis of Swedish scent hounds, Fox Hounds and Swiss scent hounds In 1893, a large-scale breeding program was initiated with the aim of creating a homogeneous, national scent hound breed (preferably for hare hunting). It is very similar to the Hamiltonstovare, but it is a little taller and longer in the body. Today, it is Finland's most popular dog breed. It is also widespread in Sweden and Norway, and it has also found its way to other parts of the world.

The breed grows to about 55-61 cm with a weight of 20-25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

If you compare the breed with the Norwegian scent hounds, the Finnish Hound will follow a  trail during a hunt, but it does not retrieve the killed game, like the Norwegian scent hounds do, and this is a point where the Finnish Hound stands out markedly. The breed usually works alone with its hunter and as mentioned above, it is best when only having to deal with one person. The breed moves over large distances, but if you manage to train the obedience from a young age, it will maintain relatively good contact with you.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed has a short coat, which is smooth, dense and quite coarse. The coat is close to the body and the care of the coat is easily done with a rubber brush or a damp cloth. On the other hand, the large ears of the breed require attention as they fall heavily into the head and must always be kept clean to avoid nuisance.

Management of the breed

The breed tends to react relatively positively to all the learning of which it is presented with, although it is not easy to make completely obedient, thus obedience must be trained extra. One must be very kind, persistent and consistent when dealing with a dog of this breed.
