Background knowledge of the breed

The breed is a very lively dog that ,at the same time, is very energetic with a distinct and well-developed hunting instinct. Thus, the breed is more vigilant than the other Spaniel breeds, and it is therefore prepared to, if necessary, be a bit more hostile towards other people and dogs that it does not know. From a family point of view, the breed is almost always calm and friendly towards both adults and children, but it is not suitable as a purely companion dog, as one should certainly not be mistaken for its hunting instinct.

The breed needs early socialization with humans and other animals. It is also a good idea to socialize it from when it is a puppy, as the social aspect can cause problems in its adult life. Furthermore, the breed requires a patient and consistent upbringing, which includes sufficient exercise, employment and close human contact. The breed works independently when it comes to hunting, and it is very enduring, even in difficult terrain. The breed attaches strongly to its hunter and owner, and maintains relatively good contact in the open. The breed is a distinct one-man dog, but will be able to function in a family if it moves in as a puppy.

In short, the breed needs early socialization with humans and other animals. It also needs a patient and consistent upbringing, which is based on mutual respect between owner and dog. However, if you manage to implement this routine, you will get an excellent family dog if you intend to use it for hunting. This very old breed is developed from a group, which was called Land Spaniels as opposed to Water Spaniels. It has the same background as the Cocker Spaniel and was considered a variant of this breed until 1892. Over time, it has been crossed with both the Sussex Spaniel and the English Jumper Spaniel. For a while, the breeders got lost with breeding on longer backs and shorter and more solid legs. It was very focused on the hunting characteristics of the breed. Fortunately, since the 1950s, things got back on track.

The breed grows to about 46 cm with a weight of 18-25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

When the breed is with other dogs, it can be almost overly active. In fact, it can become completely uncontrollable if it does not respect you as its leader. It is very independent, but it is possible to call the dog to you if you have trained this from when it is puppy.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's reasonably long coat is glossy and smoothly adjoining with a silky structure and without an undercoat. The coat requires a lot of work with the comb and brush, and the coat must be trimmed regularly to prevent it from filtering together. As with all Spaniels, the ears should be kept clean and free of hair in the ear canal in order to avoid infections that can be a major nuisance to the dog.

Management of the breed

The upbringing of the breed requires a great deal of patience and kind corrections, but otherwise the upbringing should not cause great problems in the household. The dog's great desire to follow a trail and to retrieve can be used as special rewards to strengthen cooperation and contact, as it will clearly consider such activities as a reward.
