A Estrela Mountain Dog is a very alert watchdog that is extremely aware of its surroundings. Therefore, the breed can be very suspicious of strangers. To its family, on the other hand, it is a different matter, as it is very faithful and affectionate in relation to the family, and the people who are close to the dog. The good thing about the breed is that it is especially indulgent towards children, and it is really patient. In general, the breed is quite peaceful but possesses a natural self-confidence, which lies deep in its nature. If you manage to introduce early socialization with different people and other dogs, the breed manages to adapt to life as a companion dog. If you succeed with early socialization, it can actually be a very excellent family dog if you know what you are doing with such a breed. The breed possesses some fine qualities, but it is certainly not a dog for a first-time owner. The breed is still used as a working shepherd dog in Portugal. And if you want this breed to thrive as a family dog, it needs a lot of exercise and challenging tasks, which can stimulate it mentally and psychically. It will be a very good idea to implement a consistent training routine with the dog early on - this way you will achieve a great dog that is well-behaved and that can both function in a family and as a working dog.
This is also one of the most popular of the Portuguese shepherd dogs from the Estrela Mountains. There is a good possibility that this breed also originates from the ancient Asian Mastiffs, and it is closely related to the Spanish Mastiff. For centuries, it has protected herds of cattle on migration between different pastures against attacks by wolves. In addition, it kept watch on the farms. In the early 1900s, an attempt was made to cross the breed with a German Shepherd but the result was not a success, and now the breed is back in its original form. The breed is quite large and grows to around 65-72 cm tall with a weight of about 30-50 kg.
The is very active as a puppy and in the early stages of its youth. Especially at night, the breed tends to be on guard and sound the alarm at any unusual sound that it finds alarming or has not heard before. As an adult, it adapts to the environment in terms of activity level and lifestyle of its family. However, the breed is actually quite smart and would still love to move around and solve fun tasks.
The breed's strong and warm fur seems coarse and can probably best be compared to goat hair. The coat is either smooth or slightly wavy. The length of the breed's coat varies, as there is both a long-haired and a short-haired version of the breed. The coat should be brushed thoroughly once a week so that the dog does not shed too much. Other than the above mentioned, the coat does not require much work.
When handling this breed, it is very important to know that it is independent and energetic, and it can be quite a challenge to raise. Therefore, you must be aware that this breed demands a lot of work in terms of training before deciding to buy one. The training should preferably begin from a very young age. For optimal results with the training, you should implement a varied, friendly but consistent routine so that the dog does not get bored.
You should probably not expect to be able to keep the dog loose with you, as the breed is extremely headstrong and it will maybe run away from you if it sees other people who are walking their dogs.
