Background knowledge of the breed

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a distinctly working dog. The breed is lively, teachable temperamental, confident and fearless. If you get an Entlebucher Mountain Dog, you must be willing to spend a lot of time with the dog and make its life exciting, active and rich in content. An Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the mountain dogs in existence. It is full of life, temperamental, confident and brave. In fact, it is so brave that it is close to being described as fearless. When around people that it knows well and feels comfortable with, it is kind, sweet and affectionate. The breed is extremely loyal and strongly attached to its family, and it will simply do everything for the people that it considers to be its people. When it comes to strangers, it is a bit suspicious and on guard. In other words, it looks at strangers closely. It tends to bark and can therefore be noisy, and may have some tendency to respond to challenges that it does not feel sufficient to solve.

The breed is a medium-sized dog with a distinct need for exercise and employment. In addition, it needs a safe and social life in close contact with people.

The breed is named after the valley in the cantons of Lucerne and Bern where the last specimens of it were found in the 1920s. On the basis of these specimens, the breed was saved from extinction. The origin is uncertain, but certain features suggest a connection to the guard and cattle dogs that the Roman legions brought up through the Alps. In the home country, the breed has always been kept as a working dog without any special focus on appearance. Today, the dog can be found with both a naturally short tail and with a congenital stump tail. The breed grows to 44-50 cm with a weight of 20-25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is created for the purpose of working independently with free-range cows on the steep terrain of the Alps, and it is therefore happy to accept instructions if it is trained with it from a young age. Its hunting instinct is very restrained, so it keeps relatively close contact and is not prone to roaming, if this is something it is trained for. The breed is really good at track work, which is also an activity that it loves to do. It will therefore thrive really well if it is allowed to do some track work once in a while, as a diversion in everyday life.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat is short, smooth, slightly rough and glossy over a dense undercoat. The coat is robust and does not really require any care. A brushing removes dust and loose hair, as there may be some. The breed tends to become overweight if it does not get enough exercise, so you have to think about that when planning a diet.

Management of the breed

In general, the breed loves to work. It is good at concentrating and is positive about all the learning it is presented with. It will with great satisfaction participate in all kinds of dog sports and can become a good rescue dog, if you want this from the dog.
