Background knowledge of the breed

The modern English Toy Terrier that we know today, is a result of the breeding of the Black and Tan Terrier. The breed is closely related to the somewhat larger Manchester Terrier. It quickly became popular in England as a rat dog. What happened was that the dog was placed in a fenced arena with a lot of live rats, after which the dog had to catch and kill as many rats as possible during a certain period of time, which was a popular sport and many bets were made about the result. The original rat killer is nimble, alert and lightning fast. In the family, it is loving and self-aware, kind and accommodating to everyone. A small, very charming companion dog, which is relatively easy to raise and only takes up a little space in the household. Even such a small dog needs to move and it loves to run free. Appropriate daily exercise also reduces the risk of obesity, which is perhaps the biggest threat to the breed. The English Toy Terrier is an extremely elegant, well-balanced and compact dog with tight, dry lines. It must be harmoniously built with a long, elegant and slightly curved neck, a narrow and deep chest, with well arched ribs and a slightly curved loin. The little dwarf dogs were brought in the pockets of their owners when it was time to go to the pub. Then there was the basis for a healthy bet about whose dog could kill the most rats in the shortest time. In the late 1800s, unfortunately, the breed became very popular, as they were originally created through the selection of particularly small Manchester Terriers. They were made smaller and smaller, and eventually they were so small that they were unable to reproduce. Fortunately, the Toy Terrier was rescued at the finish line, and it has progressed since 1950. The breed will be about 25-30 cm for both sexes with a weight of approximately 2.7-3.6 kg.

The activity level of the breed

Breed has all the typical Terrier characteristics as we know them: the breed is independent, active and does not thrive on a quiet and peaceful life. It really wants something to happen, and it has to be something with speed across the field. It expects to be present where something is going on, and it would very much like to be the center of attention.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is very short, but incredibly dense and shiny. The breed only requires minimal fur care. Actually, a quick wipe with a damp cloth is sufficient, as it will remove loose and dead hair. However, the breed has a tendency to form tartar, and you must always be observant of this. You should arrange for a regular check at the vet in order to avoid complications in the future, if you want this breed.

Management of the breed

The breed is cooperative and wants to learn. You can therefore teach it tricks and new things all the time. However, one must take its small size  into account, so that it is not overloaded with work. With good contact and lots of praise, you can teach the dog many fun tricks and train it to be a very good and controlled family dog.
