An English Springer Spaniel is an absolutely lovely breed that you just absolutely love. Breed is a calm and balanced family dog and companion dog not least, which is also an energetic hunting dog that must satisfy its urge for activity and its constantly high energy level. The breed is loving, affectionate and kind in the family. It is also very indulgent with children, which makes the breed an obvious family dog. However, the breed is vigilant, but sociable in relation to strangers and other dogs. All these qualities make the breed quite uncomplicated, so it is very easy to raise and train. The breed has a great need for daily exercise and enjoys being able to move around freely. The breed really loves to receive tasks or challenges that stimulate both it mentally and physically. Furthermore, it is also important that the breed becomes a large part of the family in which it lives. The breed is old, in fact the oldest of all hunting dogs. It was originally used to find game and catch it while hunting with nets, falcons or greyhounds. Today, in its home country, the breed is divided into two types: a type that is used exclusively for hunting, and a type that is a family, companion and show dog. In terms of appearance, there is also a bit of a difference between dogs with an English and American background, but that is not as pronounced as with a Cocker Spaniel. The breed will reach a height of 51 cm for both sexes and weigh around 22-24 kg.
If you use the breed for hunting, it searches over large areas, and has certainly nothing against it. The breed is also very fond of water and it will definitely appreciate a good swim every now and then.
The coat is dense, smooth and robust without being rough. The coat protects well against wind and weather, and is less demanding to care for than certain other Spaniels. It only needs a thorough brushing once a week, and you should give the dog a bath once in a while.
As a rule, the breed is happy to learn and very cooperative. It is a good idea to start training the dog as early as possible. You should also include a motivational training routine, including plenty of treats and positive reinforcement for good and desired behavior from the dog.
