Background knowledge of the breed

The two approved varieties of foxhound: the English and the American, have always been bred to only hunt many together in a so-called pack. Although they are generally friendly and sociable, they will only be able to adapt to life in a family if they are socialized with humans from the earliest puppy age, as one should not be mistaken that the breed is a distinct hunting dog. The English Foxhound is a nice, active and energetic hunting dog. If you get an English Foxhound, you must be willing to activate it daily with lots of exercise, as it has a great need to move. Its endurance is very special and if it is not allowed to run sufficiently and burn off some energy, it can become destructive. The English Foxhound is bred to live in a large herd, but it is important to socialize the dog while it is a puppy, and you must be prepared for that. The breed is not a typical family dog and it is best suited for a family with large children, as it would be the optimal choice for a family with small children. The breed is suitable for obedience training but this requires a good portion of patience. The challenge lies in getting the dog to come back when called, as it tends to roam. Because of its hunting instinct, it will track down and set after a prey if it is spotted. In the event that it catches the smell of game, the dog can be extremely difficult to call back again.

The very strong hunting instinct places great demands on exercise and mentally stimulating employment, and you must really know what you are doing when dealing with this breed. In general, the dog is more dependent on company with fellow dogs than with humans. It is said that French scent hounds and local British hunting dog variants were crossed as far back as the 700s. Very early on, books regarding the breeding began to be kept, and the upper class in England spent fortunes on their hunting dogs. Around 1650, wealthy settlers brought Foxhounds to North America where the breed gradually evolved along a slightly different track. It became lighter, faster and more high-legged than the English version. Today, English and American Foxhounds are recognized as two different breeds.

The breed grows to about 56-63 cm with a weight of 25-34 kg.

The activity level of the breed

Originally, a large herd of dogs was let loose when the fox hunt began. The dogs had to run the fox tired and hold it tight until the hunters, who followed on heavy hunting horses, reached them to put an end to its sufferings. This form of hunting is now banned from live game in almost all countries and replaced with hunting for an artificial hare. This is a good description of the activity level of the breed, and it tells you that it requires a lot of experience to have a dog, if you want this breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed can vary from very short and shiny to a little longer and rougher. It does not require much care and it is quite easy to keep in check.

Management of the breed

If an eight to ten week old puppy moves from the pack of dogs and is included in the family, it can of course be raised like other dogs. However, if it happens after these weeks, it can become a bit problematic. The recipe is kindness, consistency, perseverance, variety and reward.
