Background knowledge of the breed

Dogue de Bordeaux is also called the French Mastiff. The breed is an old French dog breed that was used for hunting and guarding. Today, the breed is used as a family dog and companion dog, but it can easily still function as a watchdog if you want to use the breed for that purpose. The breed has an incredibly cooperative, intelligent and fearless mind, which means that the breed has had several functions over time, which says something about the breed's versatility and adaptability. The breed has been used for a wide variety of things, such as shepherd dogs in flocks, hunting, fighting and as guard dogs, which it is really good at. Nowadays, the breed is exclusively used as a family dog and watchdog. The breed's slightly harsh and superior appearance makes it a formidable watchdog, but one should not be intimidated by its appearance, given that behind its rough appearance hides a sweet, loving, loyal, drooling and lovable friend. These qualities make the breed a companion dog, and one can do nothing but love the breed. In general for the breed, it is always closely linked to its family, patient with the children of the family, but may be reserved towards strangers and it  may take some time and respect to win its trust. The breed is certainly not a first-time dog, as it requires a little experience in keeping a dog, but it is usually calm and restrained, and it does not get easily aroused. However, one should still not be mistaken by the dog and remember what it is really capable of. Originally, the breed was used as a cattle driver and as a watchdog on the vineyards in the area around Bordeaux in France. The breed barely survived a national crisis and two World Wars, but came back strong with actor Tom Hanks in the film, "Turner and Dog", made in 1986. The breed is often referred to by names such as: French mastiff, Bordeaux dog, Bordeaux bulldog, The Bordeaux or just DDB. The breed grows to 60-68 cm with a weight of up to 50 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed has a desire to hunt, which is actually quite controlled. It likes to keep close contact with its driver. As a youngster, the dog is quite active and needs plenty of exercise in order to waste some of its energy. When sexually mature, the breed is self-conscious, but it is not a dog that likes to fight if it has been socialized with other dogs and to humans.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is fine, short and is soft in its structure. The coat requires very little care, which really only consists of a daily wiping to remove dust and loose hair. The deep folds or wrinkles on the head must be kept clean and dry to avoid skin irritations that can cause infections and inflammation, which can be a great inconvenience to the dog.

Management of the breed

The breed possesses a lot of qualities. It is a very versatile breed as it is harsh and sensitive at the same time. The breed always responds best to a friendly and consistent upbringing from the time it is a puppy. Hardness will only break the trust and shut off the will to learn, and it will eventually lose respect for you.
