When you see a Dogo Argentino for sale

A Dogo Argentino, also called an Argentine Mastiff, is one of the breeds that are banned in many countries, especially in the north. It is classified as a muscle dog and you should therefore pay attention when you see this breed for sale. Originally, the dog was bred as a hunting dog for large game hunting, but is also used as a police and military dog in some countries.

The breed is a mix of ten other dog breeds and the purpose was to create a dog that was brave and strong enough to hunt and attack larger game. At the same time, they wanted a breed that also functioned as a family dog, despite its hunting characteristics and size. In the breed's home country, which is Argentina, it is still used for hunting wild boar and puma, among others. It can both track and hunt game but it has also rescued many poor farmers in their home country by rescuing crops from, for example, wild boar and providing meat for the families.

Appearance and care of a Dogo Argentino

A Dogo Argentino, or Argentine Mastiff, is a large and muscular dog breed. As an adult, it will weigh somewhere between 40 and 50 kg and it can grow up to 65 cm tall. The dog has a distinctly strong musculature, ranging from its large and broad head to the strong neck and all the way down to the legs. In general, the breed is well proportioned and in good balance in its appearance.

The coat of this breed is short and dense, so the fur does not require that much care. The majority of this dog breed is white with a black pigmented nose. However, black markings are sometimes seen around the eyes. The optimal care of this breed's coat is a weekly brushing and possibly a bath if needed. Since a Dogo Argentino does not have an undercoat, it will have a slightly delicate skin, which means that you have to be aware of whether it is out in the sun a lot.

The breed has some strong and fast-growing nails, which must be cut regularly to prevent them from splitting or sticking to the surface. In addition, as with other breeds, it is a good idea to pay attention to the dog's ears. Check them daily for earwax and smell them. Also, always make sure that the ears are dry and clean. In addition to the ears, the teeth must also be cared for regularly. Feel free to train the dog for regular tooth brushing right from the start, this way it will get used to the routine and you will avoid a struggle in the future.

The mind and activity level of a Dogo Argentino

This breed has a very dominant mind by nature. In addition, it is also energetic and courageous when it is required to be. For the same reason, you must pay attention to raising the dog. Use a harsh but loving tone from the start, so that you, as a human being, are the dominant one. If you succeed in raising the dog right, you will be able to have a gentle and happy dog that easily adapts to its surroundings. It will be protective of its family and rarely display aggressive behavior when in a safe and secure environment. Due to its gentle and calm mind, the breed will be able to live well with children if they are brought up to interact with each other.

If you have another dog of the same sex, a dominant behavior from this breed may occur, and it is therefore not recommended to have a dog of the same sex, together with a Dogo Argentino. Despite it being a good and gentle dog, you can unfortunately not ease the hunting instinct through training, therefore this breed will always have a risk of attacking as it lies deep in the genes. A Dogo Argentino is a strong and athletic dog, therefore it requires a certain amount of daily exercise. If you have desires for a dog that can settle for a few short walks a day, this is not the breed for you.

Due to the dog’s hunting instinct, this breed is suitable for track work and activities that require a good sense of smell. A good amount of exercise in the form of a bike ride or agility is also preferable for this breed. This will keep it in shape as well as mentally activated. If you do not provide plenty of exercise and mental training, the dog can develop behavioral problems and it can be dangerous in the long run. Its muscular body and dominant tendencies will be able to take over, thereby creating an aggressive and stubborn dog if not stimulated daily.

Does it fit into my family?

A Dogo Argentino can easily become a good family dog if its genes are good and if it raised correctly from the start. However, the breed is illegal in many countries and you must be careful with this type of dog. As the breed is partly bred on its muscular build and brave attitude and partly on a calm mind, you can not be certain what type of dog you get. Due to the dog's high demands for exercise and training, it is not a recommendable dog as a first-time buyer.
