Background knowledge of the breed

A Dobermann is mainly kind, peaceful and affectionate towards the family and children by nature. Despite his social nature, a Dobermann is not a distinct companion dog, and you should be aware of this breed if you intend to acquire a Dobermann. In the young years of the dog, it will test the boundaries of the household, which can be quite the challenge. Male dogs in particular can tend to challenge, even when they have reached the age of a young dog. As a family dog, it is faithful and affectionate, but it is also a breed that requires some experience which is why it is not a breed for first-time dog owners. The breed actually has a great need for a lot of human closeness, even if one should not believe it. The breed also requires a lot of exercise and employment in solving meaningful tasks to keep the breed's mind in check. It is important to point out that the breed must be brought up consistently throughout its life. With this breed, it is about setting clear and distinct boundaries, and rewarding desired behaviors so that the breed can distinguish between what is right and wrong.

In the early 1870s, Friedrich Louis Dobermann created the breed on the basis of random sharp dogs of unknown origin. However, a predecessor to today's Rottweilers and local farm dogs has certainly played a crucial role. The goal was an effective watchdog that could help him in his work as a tax collector, night watchman and municipal dog catcher. Later, the Manchester Terrier and Greyhound contributed in giving the breed its elegance. The breed has also been widely used as a police dog.

The breed is a large dog with a size of up to 68-72 cm with a weight of 32-45 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed has a lot of energy, and a drive that requires a good deal of patience from the family who want a dog of this breed. In the company of the family, however, it is very happy and really wants to be in close contact with its family members. However, the breed has a temperament that you should not forget, and you should know what to do when acquiring a dog of this breed.

Fur care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is very short, hard, shiny and close-fitting. The coat does not really require any care, but a daily wiping with a cloth removes the loose hair that would otherwise settle in furniture and carpets, which can be annoying for some people.

Management of the breed

The breed is quite labor-intensive. It can also be described as cooperative, teachable and a pleasure to train with if you have the right experience to handle this breed. You will achieve the best results with the breed by being consistent but, at the same time, friendly both in voice and body language. You should finish any exercise in a good mood, so it gives the dog motivation for the next sequence. This way of positive training will create trust and the dog will respect you, which is crucial to achieve good results with the dog.
