Background knowledge of the breed

The Danish Spitz is a very adorable breed with a rather fine appearance that you can not help but like. In addition to its good appearance, the breed is also friendly, tolerant and sociable towards humans and other animals. However, the breed has a reputation for being a bit vigilant and tends to bark if uninvited guests enter its territory. In terms of family, the breed is very loving and affectionate towards its family members, and the breed is an always well-placed playmate for the children that always take good care of the minors in the family. When it comes to strangers, it can be a bit reserved, and you have to take that into account if you want a dog of this breed. In general, the dog works really well as a companion dog, and it thrives well in this role.

The breed thrives best with a good social life in close contact with people it cares about and knows well. Despite this, the breed is really easy to teach how to be home alone, which is a pretty good trait to possess. After a little training, it is perfectly fine with being left alone at home while you are at work etc. However, the breed greatly appreciates exercise and tasks, but the breed is not extremely demanding. It will definitely do best in an active family who lives in a house with a reasonable garden where it can run free in an enclosure area.

The breed has probably existed in Denmark for countless years. It has lived a very anonymous and unnoticed life under names like Samoyed Spitz, Wolf Spitz and Greenlander Spitz. It lived mostly on farms in Jutland as the children's dog, but it was found to be living in the cities with ordinary citizens and traders. In 1988, the Danish Kennel Club took the initiative to collect and register as many dogs of the breed as possible. This led to a preliminary registration and a standard based on the dogs approved for breeding. However, the breed is not internationally recognized yet.

The breed is usually between 43-49 with a weight of up to 18 kg.

The activity level of the breed

Until today, the breed has functioned as a combination of farm dog and companion dog, and it is also good in that role. Its hunting desire is very restrained, so it does not tend to roam around on its own, but usually stays close to its area and its people. However, you should not be mistaken that it has a hunting instinct in it, and you have to train it carefully so that it does not suddenly run away from you. However, it has a reasonably high level of activity where it will appreciate some brisk walks during the day where it can use some of its energy.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's coat is glossy and medium length. It has a soft and thick undercoat, which will protect the dog well in all kinds of weather to which the dog is exposed. The coat should be brushed and styled thoroughly once a week to limit shedding in the transition periods of spring and fall. Since the coat is white and cream colored, a bath can occasionally do wonders for the dog and its coat.

Management of the breed

The breed is quite uncomplicated, and it does not require very much. The upbringing rarely causes problems if it is started early and carried out with kind consistency and a mutual respect between dog and owner. The dog is intelligent and happy to solve tasks, so with a varied and fast-paced training, it is suitable for many types of dog sports such as agility.
