Dachshund for sale

A Dachshund is a low-bred hunting dog, which is particularly suitable for burial hunting, ie. hunting in other animals' graves, such as badgers and foxes. The Dachshund is available in three different sizes; standard, dwarf and miniature as well as with three different types of fur; short-haired, long-haired and coarse-haired.

Origin and history of the Dachshund

Originally, the Dachshund is from Germany where it was bred for badger hunting several hundred years ago. The task of the Dachshund was to penetrate the graves of the badger and fox and chase them out so that the hunter could shoot them. It requires great courage and perseverance, which are some of the characteristics of the Dachshund. It is believed that the breed already originated in the 18th century, but first became widespread and popular somewhat later. In the late 1800s, the breed came to America, and in 1888, the German Dachshund Association was founded, after which the breeding became more organized.

In German and English, the dog is called "Dachshund", which means badger dog. The Dachshund is also often called the "sausage dog" due to its long body.

The different variants of the breed, both in terms of coat and size, have different temporal origins. The standard version is the original size and the short-haired variant is the original fur variant. The other variants came subsequently. Today, the Dachshund is far more widespread as a family dog than as a hunting dog. However, there are still some who go hunting with their Dachshunds. The breed has been really popular in the Danish royal family, which has had several Dachshunds over the years, which were also used for hunting.

Appearance and characteristics of the Dachshund

The Dachshund has a different appearance depending on the variant in question. The standard version is the largest. It is over 35 cm in breast circumference and weighs about 9 kg. The dwarf variant is the second largest and is between 30 and 35 cm in breast circumference, but only weighs 4 to 5 kg. Finally, there is the miniature variant which is max. 30 cm in breast circumference and only weighs approximately 2 kg. There is also great variation when looking at the different types of fur that the Dachshund is available in. The short-haired, which is the original version, has a short but dense fur. The long-haired one has a long coat, which waves a lot on the ears. The Long-haired Dachshund’s fur is very long at the legs. Finally, there is the rough-haired Dachshund, which fur is more combative and tough than the other two varieties.

In addition to the size and coat, the different variants of the Dachshund are very similar. They all have short legs, a long body and a strong and protruding chest. The ears are drooping and rather large compared to the rest of the dog. All three varieties have a long and pointed head with a long nose. The coat color of the short-haired and long-haired variety is typically monochromatic red or reddish-yellow, while the coat color of the rough-haired is more wild-colored.

Mentality and behavior

Although the Dachshund is one only breed with many different varieties within it, many Dachshund owners still believe that there is a big difference in the temperament and behavior of the different varieties. Many believe, for example, that the short-haired variant is generally the most hot-tempered of the dogs, while the long-haired is the most calm and the rough-haired is the most playful.

Of course, all three fur variants share many common characteristics. For example, they are all very brave, robust and hardy dogs. It is a large dog in a small body. The courage of the breed probably comes from its past as a grave hunting dog, where it required great courage to penetrate into the badger's dark holes and chase them out. In addition, the Dachshund is an independent, stubborn and slightly reserved dog. It accepts strangers, but just has to look at them before it bothers to talk to them. To its family, however, the Dachshund is affectionate and loving. A Dachshund can be a little difficult to train. It requires patience and perseverance.
