Background knowledge of the breed

The Curly-Coated Retriever breed is the oldest of the retriever breeds in existence. The breed is extremely known for being brave, intelligent and very independent. The Curly is especially known for its good nose, and it also has a really good marking ability. The breed is good for hunting, especially when it comes to birds and game. Thus, the breed is a dog with a great personality, which attaches itself closely to its owner. The breed is also very suitable as a watchdog if that is what you are searching for.

The breed is the largest, most robust and most independent of all the retrievers that exist. Like the other retrievers, it is calm, reliable and friendly to everyone in the family, including other species and dogs. The breed is one of the most vigilant dogs in the hunting dog groups, and it may seem somewhat skeptical of strangers and other dogs, if it is not used to humans or dogs. It is not a dog for the first-time dog owner, and you must therefore have some experience if you want a dog of this breed. Therefore, the breed requires early socialization, consistent upbringing, a lot of exercise and space to move, as well as mentally stimulating tasks and a good social life. This is a must if you want the dog to become a good family dog, and not become too self-willed, as it may tend to be. Due to this, it is important to have some experience with having a dog.

The breed can be traced back to around the year 1800, when the, now extinct, English Tweed Water Spaniel, was crossed with some of the dogs that came from Newfoundland to England with the cod fishermen. The Curly-Coated Retriever may also be a result of crossing other water-retrieving bird dogs. It soon became popular as a hunting dog with game wardens and overseers in the forests where its vigilance was an aid in the fight against poachers. As it can function well in even the harshest climate, it has also been used as an avalanche and rescue dog. The breed can grow up to 68 cm with a weight of 32-36 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is late to develop. This means that as a youngster, it is very active and has a lot of energy that needs to be exhausted. The breed tends to attach most to the person who trains and works with it, which you should be aware of with this breed. The breed generally maintains good contact with the person it considers to be its leader, and it does not have a tendency to go its own ways if it is brought up well and consistently from the start.

Fur care and hygiene

From the neck to the tip of the tail, the body is covered by small, tight and firm curls, which lie close to the skin without an undercoat, which is where the breed has also got its name from. The rest of the body has smooth hair. The fur of the breed has a purpose, and the very special fur is adapted to work in water, but also protects well from scratches as well as wind and weather. The coat does not require much care, as it is said that the coat is self-cleaning. The fur provides protection during hunting and moving through other tough and dirty terrain. As mentioned above, the breed does not have an undercoat but it does have a special grease, which insulates during water work and allows the dog to dry quickly. When working in thorn bushes, the strong curls provide extra protection for the dog, as the curls catch and break, or otherwise prevent thorns and other things from harming the dog.

Management of the breed

Generally, the breed is positive towards learning but can be a little stubborn. It is very attached to one particular person, which can make it difficult for other people. The breed therefore requires an owner who can calmly and kindly motivate the dog in order to win its respect. In addition to hunting and retrieval, it is suitable for many other tasks, making the breed quite versatile. The Curly is an active breed that requires mental challenges and exercise, which will also stimulate its intelligent mind. The Curly-Coated Retriever enjoys spending time with its owners, and is also an excellent family dog. It is easy to get along with but is usually uninterested in people who are not part of the family, which is a clear advantage if you want the dog to function as a watchdog. The Curly-Coated Retriever can perform in many disciplines: hunting, tracking, obedience and agility. It is important to obediently train the dog from when it is a puppy. As a family dog, the Curly-Coated Retriever is calm, loving and caring towards children.
