The story of the cotton breed

The Coton De Tulear is an active, social and wonderful breed that originated in Africa, in fact, the island of Madagascar. It is said that the Coton De Tulear arrived in Madagascar several hundred years ago when a ship ran aground off the island of Réunion. This gradually developed into a larger tribe of wild dogs. Around the port city of Tuléar, the wild dogs were captured and used as farm dogs or, in some cases, as hunting dogs.

Around 1950, some Coton De Tulear dogs came to France, and in 1970, the cotton dog was recognized as a breed. Today, Coton De Tulear is a popular companion dog all over the world.

Worth knowing about Coton De Tulear as a dog breed

The breed is also often called the cotton dog because of the soft, white, cotton-like fur. A Coton De Tulear dog grows to about 25-30 cm with a weight of about 3.5-6 kg.

As a breed, the cotton dog is very socially minded, and, at the same time, it is also enormously outgoing. It has a fairly well-balanced mind that you can not help but like, and is also a confident dog that always gets along well with humans and other dogs. The Coton De Tulear is a companion dog without an equal, and a distinct family dog that attaches itself to its family. It loves to be in the family company, which also helps to make the breed extremely popular.

An allergy-friendly dog breed

A Coton De Tulear is particularly allergy-friendly, as it does not have an undercoat, and many also know the dog as the allergy-friendly dog. That is why the breed is very popular among people with allergies. Many people with allergies react to the dog’s coat itself, and a cotton dog does not have fur but hair, which means that many people with allergies can tolerate the breed.

Fur care and hygiene

As mentioned earlier, the fur is the reason for the breed's name, and as you may already know, "coton" means cotton in French, hence the name, Coton De Tulear. The coat is soft and cotton-like, and never hard or brittle; it is dense, full-bodied and can be slightly wavy. However, the soft coat also comes with some care requirements. To keep the coat nice, you should brush a cotton dog regularly, preferably once a day.

Management and upbringing

To raise a Coton De Tulear should include motivation, consistency, variation and reward. However, it is important to hold back with the treats so that the breed does not become overweight. Being overweight can easily strain the dog's small joints and knees due to its small size. Instead, it is a good idea to reward the dog with positive contact in the form of, for example, praise and various games. With this kind of reward, the dog will react at least as well as if it was given a treat.
