Background knowledge of the breed

The breed, Cirneco dell’Etna, is originally from Italy. In terms of appearance, the breed is a smaller and slightly thinner version of the Pharaoh Hound. It has a great temperament - however, at the same time, the breed can be really affectionate and easy-going with people it knows. When it comes to strangers and other dogs, it is hesitant and can be somewhat reserved, especially towards other dogs of the same breed. It can be quite difficult to have this breed as a family dog, as it has a strong hunting instinct that lies very deep in its nature as well as a need for movement, which may cause problems for someone who has never had a dog before or does not know the breed well enough. In general, the breed is calm and contact-seeking indoors. However, it is important to emphasize that it is definitely not suitable for having to live in an apartment in the city, as the breed requires drainage for its distinct urge for new experiences and to run free, as it may cause problems if you can not meet this distinct need.

It is believed that the breed originated from ancient hunting dogs, and that it came from the Nile Delta to Sicily with the Phoenicians. However, new studies claim that it is a native breed of Sicilian origin. In any case, coins and engravings confirm that it existed in the area around the volcano Etna for hundreds of years before our era. For centuries, it lived in isolation and unnoticed as a hunting dog, and it is still here that it has its greatest use. The breed is really rare to find outside of Italy. The breed has a height of 46-52 cm and a weight of 8-12 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed was made for hunting, and you should definitely not be mistaken. In fact, the breed was originally adapted to hunting wild rabbits in the difficult terrain of Etna's rugged lava slopes in Italy. The breed operates by listening and sniffing its way to the prey, pursuing and killing it quickly and efficiently. It's uncompromising on the hunt, and it's actually quite good at it.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed has a short and fine coat, which is close together. However,it does not provide any protection against moisture and cold, meaning the dog is reluctant to go out in bad weather, as it certainly does not enjoy it. The breed definitely thrives in a slightly warmer climate and likes to stay outdoors when it is hot.

Management of the breed

When dealing with this breed, it is important to familiarize yourself with how the upbringing is to be done. It is always a good idea to reward the dog for good behavior when you train together. It is also important to train cooperation and contact with the breed. For achieving the best result with the dog, it is important that your training routine is kind, persistent and consistent with many rewards, as it responds well to positive experiences. However, you have to be aware to never let the dog loose in places with game and traffic, as it can tend to be a little self-willed.
