Background knowledge of the breed

The breed, Cimarron Uruguayo, is originally from South America, more specifically Uruguay, where the breed is used for the purpose of being a shepherd dog and farm dog. Although it is very difficult to clarify the exact history of the breed, it is known that it originated from dogs that came with Spanish and Portuguese conquerors to Uruguay in the 1700s. It is also known that the breed arose from mixing greyhound breeds with molossus and some type of shepherd dog. The breed has been of great help to farmers for many years. The Cimarron Uruguayo came to be after mixing different dogs from Spain and Portugal. The breed is very enduring, intelligent and it is created to survive in very harsh conditions.

Common to many dogs of the breed, it lived in an almost wild state a long time ago where only the strongest survived - you could compare it to survival of the fittest. The breed adapted to the conditions of areas where the food was good. However, they began to become a danger to live animals and even humans. This led to the killing of Cimarron Uruguayo at the instigation of the authorities in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are reports of tens of thousands. Despite this, some females with puppies managed to escape to the Olimar River and Cerros Largos. Many farmers at Cerros Largo knew about the abilities and intelligence of the Cimarron Uruguayo so selective work was initiated to preserve the breed. Due to the work of the farmers at Cerros Largos, we can enjoy the qualities of Cimarron Uruguayo today.

In 1969, a Cimarron Uruguayo was shown for the first time at an official dog show organized by the Uruguayan Kennel Club. The first real standard of the breed was made from which the breed we have today originates. The dog show started a very significant selection of the basic dogs and there are now more than 4500 registered dogs of the breed. It has even become the official national breed for the country of Uruguay.

In recent years, the breed has undergone great development thanks to local enthusiasts and breeders in other countries, especially in the South American countries, Argentina and Brazil. The gradual spread of the breed is closely studied and monitored and all traits are taken care of, including hereditary traits as well as health and temperament.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is a distinct farm dog and guard dog. The breed requires regular training, especially obedience must be trained, as the breed is very self-willed and independent. The breed is a medium-sized dog with short fur and an undercoat, which is easy to keep. It is good for shepherding, agility, obedience and game tracking. The coat is designed to protect the dog, as they must be able to live in extremely harsh weather conditions. The breed is very affectionate towards the people that it considers to be the shepherds and the.

Management of the breed

Due to the breed's strong guarding and shepherding qualities, the dog has to be trained, which requires a lot from the owner. Therefore, it is also a dog that only experienced dog owners should own, as you need to know the breed and how to implement an efficient and strict training routine.
