A Chow Chow is a breed that has a very distinctive appearance, as it looks a bit like a bear. It is extremely adorable with its sweet facial expressions and it has a lot of fur. Although a Chow Chow is extremely adorable, one should not be mistaken that the breed is an independent dog, which is actually really close to being described as self-willed. However, it should be mentioned that it is loving and affectionate towards its family. The breed often chooses a particular member as its favorite, but it is also very sweet to the remaining members of the family.
When it comes to strangers, it is often somewhat reserved and it takes some time before it becomes comfortable with strangers. The breed never seeks out fights itself, but it can get very angry if it feels provoked, which you have to be prepared for with this breed. The special psyche of the breed requires great understanding, and the breed is not a first-time dog. A Chow Chow should have a good social life and regular exercise to avoid becoming overweight. You will have to be very focused in terms of feeding, as the breed eats less than other breeds of similar size, and it has difficulty metabolizing protein-rich dog food. The Chow Chow with its characteristic blue tongue is over 4000 years old. It was originally used as a hunting, guard and draft dog in Mongolia and Manchuria. In connection with the many wars in the area, the Chinese brought the Mongolian dog to China where it gained high social status. Because of its appearance, it later became the temple dog, and the Chow Chow and Pekingese were considered the holy lions of the Buddha that were to scare demons away. In the 18th century, the breed came to Europe with British sailors as a companion dog. The breed is very large and robust with a height of 48-56 cm. The breed usually has a weight of 20-30 kg.
Many people have the wrong impression that a Chow Chow does not like to move. However, it is a fairy tale and the breed actually loves to walk and play. If you as an owner like to go on long walks, the breed is fast at short distances and enduring on long trips. The breed has a kind of funny walk, which is because of the uneven and rocky areas where it originally comes from.
The breed can have two fur varieties. Both varieties have upright cover hairs and a dense, soft undercoat. The long-haired Chow Chow requires a lot of fur care, which you should let the dog get used to as early as possible so it will become a nice and enjoyable routine instead of a fight every time. With this breed, you should probably expect one hour of fur care per week. The short-haired one is less time consuming, but the coat still needs to be maintained every now and then.
In some areas, the independent nature of a Chow Chow can be compared to a cat without it being understood negatively. With a positive influence from an early age, you get really far with this breed. It can not be forced into anything - however, it can be lured into much with good rewards and treats.
