Background knowledge of the breed

A Chodsky pes is friendly, welcoming and really happy towards adults, children, strangers, other dogs and fellow dog of the same breed. The breed originates from the Czech Republic, and "Pes" means dog in Czech and "Chodský" / "Chodsko" (the inflection of the word) is an area in the western Czech Republic. The appearance of the dogs is very similar to a small long-haired German Shepherd, and many people actually believe that the breed is a mix of a German Shepherd at first glance. The most obvious characteristics of the breed are the upright, small and forward-facing ears that are placed high on the head. The breed also has an elegant long neckline with the characteristic long and abundant fur.

The breed is an active and able-bodied dog, which attaches itself to the whole family and is very happy with its owners. The breed is suitable as a training companion or as a family dog with the active family, who likes to be outside and also loves to go out into nature. The breed can be quite barking as it guards the home and the family, which is why the breed also works really well as a watchdog. The breed needs a good social life with a close relationship to its owners or family. The breed also needs exercise and mentally, stimulating tasks so that it can use its wise intelligence.

The Chodsky pes has been known in the Czech Republic since the 12th century and has been bred in closed pedigree since 1984 under the Czech kennel club. It was especially used to guard the borders between Bohemia and Bavaria in the 12th century. There is evidence of breeding work as early as in the 16th century. Unfortunately, the breeding disappeared again in the 17th century when the border guard disappeared. The dogs were then used as farm dogs where they guarded the farms and were used for herding. In 1984, a man named Jan Findej searched for dogs of this breed and with their original appearance. Based on the dogs that matched the original appearance, a great deal of breeding work was started to regenerate the breed. More recently, the breed was admitted to the Nordic kennel clubs in January 2013. In mid-2019, the breed received the long-awaited pre-approval in FCI, meaning that the breed can now have an FCI pedigree and can participate internationally, like many other breeds.

The breed grows to about 52-55 cm with a weight of 18-25 kg.

The activity level of the breed

The breed is active and generally loves to move. It is happy to have new positive experiences in the form of praise when performing a task. At home, it is calm, relaxed and enjoys cozy moments with the family. It is contact-seeking and loves to work, and it is only the imagination that sets the limits of the possibilities of use.

Fure care and hygiene

The coat of the breed is about 5-12 cm. It is long and can be smooth or slightly wavy. It requires regular brushing to avoid loose hair around the home but, otherwise, the coat is very easy to hold. The coat does not filter so you do not have to worry about that.

Management of the breed

The breed really appreciates the owner's attention and is happy to cooperate when its efforts are rewarded quickly and varied. The breed is very teachable and would like to be mentally challenged by searching for tracks.
