Description of the breed

A Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the entire world. Although it has the title of the smallest dog breed, it is completely unaware of its small size. The Chihuahua definitely believes that it is the world's largest dog breed. The breed can be described as follows: a small dog with a big ego where everything revolves around it. The breed is self-conscious, curious and it can be a little furious at times. A Chihuahua will have plenty of space, even in the smallest apartment.  It is a loving and entertaining companion dog, and the breed is therefore popular with older people who want a little friend in the form of a dog. The breed is very slender, making it less suitable in a family with small children, as it is a bit fragile. A Chihuahua is an active little dog who enjoys everything from daily walks to play, but it adapts perfectly to the owner's activity level, and it can thrive with all levels of activity. However, you should know that this breed needs close contact with its people and it loves attention. The Chihuahua is considered to be the smallest dog breed in the world, and it bears the name of the largest province in Mexico (Chihuahua). It is believed that these dogs used to live in nature and were then captured and tamed during the Toltec civilization. Depictions of a dwarf dog called Techichi living in Tula were used as decoration on the city's architecture. These statues are very similar to the Chihuahua of today. There are many legends about the origin of the breed. The only thing we know for sure is that around 1895, it was discovered by American tourists. It was brought to the United States and further distributed all over the world. There are no specific rules for breed’s height but it is usually not many centimeters. The ideal weight is between 1.5 and 3 kg, so the breed is very small. The breed comes in two varieties: a long-haired and a short-haired version.

The activity level of the breed

The breed likes to work closely with its owner to solve tasks. It is also very curious and independent by nature, and it can be quite headstrong despite its small size. It is often seen the breed does cold weather and will therefore not move outside in cold and humid weather. If you want to walk the dog outside in cold weather, it may be a good idea to give it a warm jacket or sweater. In terms of dogs of other breeds, it would like to be the one to decide, which can create a dangerous situation in the wrong company, due to its small size of which it is not even aware of.

Fur care and hygiene

The Chihuahua is available in two fur varieties. The short-haired one is the original breed as we know it, while the long-haired one comes from crossing the bread with Continental Dwarf Spaniels. Both types of fur only need regular brushing, and it is not particularly time-consuming to keep the fur in check.

Management of the breed

A Chihuahua is nimble and attentive, and it can learn everything that you want it to learn. However, it is important to be careful about letting go of the small dog in the company of larger dogs or animals, as other animals may confuse it with a hunting prey due to its small size. It must, like all other dogs, be trained and exercised but it does not require much exercise like other large dogs. When the dog is a puppy, it is important to prevent it from jumping up and down sofas and high places, as it can damage the dog's joints.
