Background knowledge of the breed

The breed originates from the US and is an active dog that certainly loves water. The breed possesses high intelligence and great versatility, which is why it is used as a hunting dog, service dog and rescue dog. In general, the breed is an absolutely fantastic hunting dog, which is also very affectionate towards its family. The good thing about the breed is that it can be alone or in a herd, and this should definitely be highlighted in the description of the dog. The breed is good at protecting its family and the people it loves.

The breed is an extremely distinct working dog and contains a lot of self-confidence, which can make the breed a bit challenging to deal with. The breed is generally sociable and nice to strangers and other dogs, especially other breeds. It will always try to do its best to protect its family and territory. It will do well in an active family who is willing to satisfy its urge for meaningful tasks. However, it does not thrive as a mere companion dog, as the breed will quickly get bored if it is not stimulated regularly. The breed is powerful and needs a lot of physical exercise with the opportunity to move freely - preferably in an open and closed area where it can use its distinguished sense of smell and retrieve. It also needs lots of contact with the family, which should be provided to a great extent during the dog’s youth.

The breed is said to be descended from two puppies of a small variety of Newfoundland, which was rescued from a wrecked ship off the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland in 1807. Hereafter, it is said that the breed was formed by crossing various local dogs. It was developed for hunting birds in water under the most unfavorable weather and water conditions. The dog often had to break through the ice during the many strenuous retrievals and withstand wind, tides and long, cold swims during work. However, it is also suitable for hunting on land. The breed is about 66 cm, making it a large dog.

The activity level of the breed

The breed greatly appreciates human attention and would very much like a lot of care. The breed is active, agile and happy to play.

Fur care and hygiene

The breed's double coat consists of a short, coarse, slightly wavy outer coat and a dense, fine and wooly undercoat. The coat contains natural oils, which make it waterproof and protects the dog under harsh conditions.

Management of the breed

The breed is strong and you should definitely be aware of that if you want this breed. It needs to be socialized early on, and it is important to teach the breed about basic obedience. However, it will rarely cause problems, as it is very teachable and cooperative. In order to get the optimal results with this breed, you must be ready to implement the right training for it. The breed has strong will-power as well as a well-developed urge to protect its family. A Chesapeake takes a little longer to mature mentally than a Labrador, which the breed resembles. So keep the dog’s mental state in mind and adjust your training accordingly.
